Rating: Summary: Powerful yet easy reading Review: The Power of Focus contains many useful tips for leading a happier and more successful life, both personal and business. It has been put together with the understanding that people who buy this type of book do not want a heavy read, they want the key points in a format they can follow. The book claims that if you follow the authors' plan, you can't fail. I don't doubt this is true. This is a must-read for both budding entrepreneurs starting out and those in business who have somewhat lost their way.
Rating: Summary: Personal and Business Success Tips Review: It was a pleasure to read this book even though some chapters reminded me of similar inspirational stories in the Chicken Soup for the Soul series and motivational books by other authors. Authors Canfield, Hansen, and Hewitt suggest doing what you do best, getting rid of "toxic" relationships, and living a balanced life. I particularly liked the suggestion of creating "a picture book of your most important goals," because the mind thinks in pictures rather than words. The authors sincerely believe in their strategies for business and personal success and it is difficult not to get caught up in their enthusiasm.
Rating: Summary: Another Great Book from Jack Canfield Review: I really liked this book. The idea of staying focused is something so essential to anyone who is seriously interested in achieving success. As a success coach and a motivational author, I come across people everyday that are so talented yet so unsuccessful--and the only reason is because they are all over the place. Scattered. Lack of focus. If you have a problem staying focused I highly recommend you getting this book. Zev Saftlas, Author of Motivation That Works: How to Get Motivated and Stay Motivated
Rating: Summary: A must for anyone who wants to accomplish their goals!!! Review: I am a busy full time worker and full time college student who can never seem to get anything done. I received this book as an 'out of the blue, for no reason, "this book made me think of you"'gift from my father and I couldn't have asked for anything better. My life is now fulfilling and I am really changing the value of my life from the advice given by this book. Although it is written from a business aspect, everything can be related to one's personal life as well. I will warn readers that it will require more than one reading to get all from the book, not because it is hard to read (it is actually very easy and compelling to read), but because there is so much useful information that it requires constant rereading and review to absorb it all. Also, make sure you pay attention when you are reading, don't just skim over the words with your eyes. Take notes and highlight. The Power of Focus also recommends other great 'must read' books. But this book really breaks down and organizes all the details and steps to building good habits that lead to success. I recommend this book to people of all ages, especially to teenagers, young adults, and college students. It's better to learn this stuff early.
Rating: Summary: The roadmap to success. Review: I say that this book is a "Roadmap" to success because the terrain itself is quite familiar. It's all been said before: set goals, replace bad habits with good habits, build a mastermind group, etc. However, unlike other books of this genre, the authors of "The Power of Focus" have charted a course for the reader to follow. Instead of just telling you "what", they also tell you "how." It doesn't get any simpler than this--I'm still waiting for a book that only requires that you read it and then suddenly money just starts appearing out of nowhere. At the end of each chapter, the authors have provided action steps for the reader to take. I personally really needed just this kind of systematic, organized approach to mastering many of these principles--I'm an amazingly creative procrastinator. The book, therefore, is kind of like a personal coach, available at any time. If you truly apply all of the principles--and it will be easier for you to do so if you actually follow the action steps at the end of each chapter--then you will likely succeed in your endeavors.
Rating: Summary: It's not what you say but how you say it Review: With these kinds of books, it's not what you say but how you say it. Yeah, many topics in this book can be found in other books in this catagory, but it is HOW the authors say it, and in what context they frame it in, that determines this book working for you. First off I am a person that drifts a lot, changing strategies, changing careers, etc. I tend to start projects vowing to finish and I tend to make pledges to change habits all to fail. I thought all was a lost cause until I read this book. It helped me stay on track, but it wasn't so rigid that I couldn't move. But I think the best thing about this book is the simplistic manner in which it was written. There is something about the way that they explain the most basic things about habits, about the importance of practicing, about taking responsibility for your life, about having a purpose. I am so glad that I got this book. They are like my personal coaches, always there reminding me, keeping me focused on what I need to do to get where I want to go. They explain things so basic that I will never outgrow the information. I have self improvement books that are out dated because they got to specialized, and on the flip side it is written in such a basic style that even teenagers can pick it up and get a head start on this stuff. I wish I would have. This book touches on and explains the building blocks, the fundamentals of success. My copy is getting worn out with markings and highlighted sections and notes in the margins. I keep it very handy and use it in those moments when I need a quick motivation and reminding as well as to get centered or back on track.
Rating: Summary: Was impressed, being just a student Review: never read those, positive thinking , chicken soups and all that stuffs. but i think this was very inspirational. make your wishlist was the best. i made a wishlist last year after reading this book, and today i can see 1/2 of them already fulfilled, believe me,it changed my life. focus is really powerful. read to give your opinion, don't let others opinion decide for you.
Rating: Summary: Don't expect too much Review: The 2-star rating may be a bit unfair but I had to give contrast to those tenths of enthusiastic reviews. After having read about 30 "success books" I picked up this one and I must say it's neither terribly bad nor very good. I expected much more from the 5-star reviews... Also, I agree that tips like "hire a PA" may be good for SOME people but most of us have to do the homework themselves. I believe that people at the top who could afford that army of specialists are already familiar with 99% of the tips provided in the book and for the rest all those "mastermind groups", "achievers programs" etc. are not a good start.
Rating: Summary: I Threw This Book In the Trash Review: This was one of the worst books I've ever read. Aside from stating the obvious (Focus is important) the authors frequently recommend "hiring a personal assistant" to do the stuff you aren't good at or don't like. How out of touch can they be? After reading such recommendations and restatements of the obvious many times I literally threw this book across the room into the trash.
Rating: Summary: Change Your Habits to Change Your Life Review: That's one of the primary principles espoused by the authors. It is not only consistent with "common sense" (which perhaps isn't as common as it once was); it's also supported by scientific evidence in psychology and other behavioral sciences. But just *how* do we change habits, many of which are decades old and deeply ingrained? The authors don't sugar coat the fact that it takes willingness and sustained effort. At the same time they offer practical exercises and genuinely inspirational anecdotes and advice, which help ease the pain of change. Put another way, I felt as if I had three encouraging mentors within easy reach any time I felt discouraged or "stuck." These mentors believed in me. The fact that these mentors were "speaking" to me via words on a page gives you an idea of how effectively they communicate their ideas and realistic confidence in their approach. My only criticism of the book is that it is aimed at business people at the management level or above, e.g., executives, business owners, and professionals. For example, at various points in the book they recommend hiring a personal trainer, personal assistant, housekeeper, lawn service, bookkeeper, and/or a receptionist to free up more time for one to concentrate on one's strengths. Yikes! While I happen to be in their target market, I can't just go right out and plop down $500 to a $1000 a week to pay for all that extra help. However, I did make it one of my *goals* to hire some of the employees/contractors they recommend. Since the authors include specific, helpful advice on goal setting and goal attainment, I am more confident in my ability to eventually free up more time as they suggest. No book is perfect and I don't consider writing to an upper-middle income or above audience a serious flaw, particularly since that is the type of person most likely to purchase their book. Thus, I believe the book deserves 5 stars.
