Summary: The Power of Positive Thinking
Review: After years of reading self-help type books with just OK results, I discovered The Power of Positive Thinking. This is the most powerful self-help book I've ever read - it's turned my life around! I now have confidence, courage, self-love, great self-esteem, and stress and anxiety no longer run my life, and it's really helped my business!

Of course you can't just read this book, you'll need to take notes and do the exercises on a daily basis. It took me 3 months to work through the book and the benefits have grown steadily. Although it's all about tapping into the power of God to help you, you don't have to be Christian to do that - I'm not. But you do need to be able to connect with God, the Great Spirit, Mother Goddess, the Universal God Force, or whoever. In other words, you do need to accept a higher power, so if you want help but are offended by quotes from the bible and talk of connecting with Christ, get over it. The whole point is that we need God and He/She is ready and willing to help and empower us if we simply ask and believe. It's so easy! I can't say enough good about this book - so buy more than 1 copy, you'll want to give it to your favorite negative friends!

P.S. Peale has written lots more books, and from what I've read, they're all great, but so far I'd say The Power of Positive Thinking is the most important.

Summary: Start Again WITH THIS BOOK!
Review: There is no book quite like the Power of Positive Thinking by the late Norman Vincent Peale. This philosophy, that has instructed millions and roused controversy amongst staunch fundamentalists, is genius in it's approach to the power God can supply each of us with. This isn't a get-spriritual-quick program. But a real discipline if employed fervently. Peale takes some incredible scripture verses and makes them cornerstones in this Bible study meets personal wellness seminar. Peale was smart in that he saw that people weren't naturally spiritual, and thus needed practice. The psychology of this is actually centered around Jesus Christ and is not some new age program designed to exalt self above God. Rather, "Power" gets its force from Jesus and not our own abilities. What amazes me is the reluctance of certain Christian teachers in embracing these disciplines as a way to receive Christ and grow as a Christian. Peale does not describe it as a born-again experience, but rather a spiritual awakening of sorts. This language invites everyone, and this was all prior to the born-again designation which the media often uses as a pejorative. However, it's not neccessarily applicable to faith in other gods as one reviewer said. Jesus Christ is the undeniable center of what Peale taught. It was revolutionary, and still is-to think by using the Bible as a tool, we can be positive thinkers, better humans and grow closer to God. The Power of Positive Thinking only affirms what the Bible teaches-and makes it highly accessible for anyone seeking.

Summary: Celebrate 50 Years and Add 2002 Updated Strategies
Review: Yes, it was 1952, a full 50 years ago that NVP published his first edition of The Power of Positive Thinking. A true cultural pioneer, he launched a movement in PMA = Positive Mental Attitude, and his original book is still very useful today. NVP's influence in psychology was eventually seen in the cognitive therapy revolution. One additional improvement began in 1986 when academic studies of 'constructive pessimism' appeared in the journal Cognitive Therapy and Research. Now we know that at least half of us can do even better if we supplement The Power of Positive Thinking with The Positive Power of Negative Thinking, published in 2002 by psychologist Julie Norem. With the two books side-by-side, access to both the classic and the updated strategies is at our fingertips. So I recommend combining the foundation and the update to achieve constructive thinking and better living as we begin this 21st Century.

Summary: Amazing book . .
Review: I discovered this book through another website. I have just finished skimming the book and can't wait to start it again in greater depth. It was so relevant even all this time after it was first published. I think anyone can get something out of this book regardless of their background and I really recommend. Although I have only just touched the surface of the book I know it is going to be a positive source for my future - definitely a must buy!

Summary: YES -- and don't forget The POSITIVE Power of NEGATIVE too
Review: An earlier reviewer makes a good point 'This is it -- the original source for a great catch-phrase of American culture, "The Power of Positive Thinking."' And I agree that it pays to go to the source itself. Great Book. Of course, there are contemporary complexities to be faced in life. That is why I also recommend that readers go for the complete pair -- both the classic NVP "Power of Positive Thinking" and the new "Positive Power of Negative Thinking" by psychologist Julie Norem. With both, we get complete coverage of strategies for improving our thinking and our life.

Summary: AFTER FIFTY YEARS...
Review: The advice remains as timeless as ever. Here is the book, "The Power of Positive Thinking" brought to life as Dr. Peale and friends sit in a small group in some beautiful settings of suburban New York as well in Dr. Peale's own home.

You begin to feel as if you are hearing your great-uncle give you stories packed with wisdom and advice. Dr. Peale was almost 90 years old when this video was made, so he had had many years to reflect on what positive thinking had meant to the lives of so many. The stories are simple yet profound. They illustrate points reflecting what is common to human nature-what we all eventually go through.

Absent from this video is the screeching cry of hellfire and damnation for "the lost". Dr. Peale believed in a loving, forgiving God and spoke about quietly resting on the everlasting Principles without fear, anxiety, worry, or upset. Strange as it is while surfing the net, every now and then I run into some "religious" group who hates Peale with a vengeance. They speak of his "warped theology", "unsound doctrine" and "apostate ideas". They speak of the sin and depravity inherent in mankind. These folks would have us believe that we as God's children are bad and should feel guilty for just being born, much less living in the world. Their stock-in-trade is fear, their hearts full of anger. They cleverly cloak hate in religious terminology. They would divide us and make us fearful of everything, especially God. They tell me much more about themselves than they do God.

Dr. Peale shows that we are basically good because we come from God. We are the ones who foul and muck up our lives with negativity. God is not and never can be the author of confusion and turmoil. His love is as constant as the sun and when we are tune with God, great things come from and happen to us.

If you are a believer in God you will like this tape unles you are part of a rabid, fundamentalist sect. In that case, I would skip this. If you are not a believer in God, you will still get much from this video presentation that you can use on a practical basis in your everyday life.

It is well worth the money and something you will return to over and over again for inspiration. The only thing that I can imagine as being better is to have a session with Dale Carnegie on tape. "The Power of Positive Thinking" shows you how your thoughts affect every part of your life. This is a must-have for every seeker, believer, and those in between. Check out the works of Dale Carnegie as well, particularly "How to Stop Worrying and Start Living" , and you will see where it all really began.

Summary: A CLASSIC THAT WILL NEVER GET OUTDATED
Review: This book is powerful, but simple. Perhaps simple ideas are by nature more powerful.

I first read it over 30 years ago and I still often recall one passage of the Bible he quoted: "I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me." (Philippians 4:13) Peale's book helped me a lot in my teen years.
