Summary: Really interesting
Review: The biography of the Satanic Pope gives a great appreciation of what the satanism is all about. The book presents the basics and principles aside from the biography of an open minded and well respected man, the Satanic Pope. It has photographs of different moments of LaVey's life. A satanist must-have book.

Summary: A total disappointment...
Review: The book was a complete disappointment. After readying "The Satanic Bible" my expectations were high and I was looking forward to a look into the mind of Anton Szandor Lavey. What I found was a bias representation of him that seemed more like desperate attempt to idolize him then an objective biography. If you are looking for a good biography read: "The long hard road out of hell" by Marilyn Manson.

Summary: An entertaining read about an entertaining man.
Review: The majority of reviewers on LaVey's books usually fall into 3 categories; 1) Slobbering, groveling, worshipping followers of anything he said or did. 2) Pseudo-intellectuals trying placate their egos with supposedly intelligent perspectives on LaVey. 3) Slobbering, groveling, worshipping religious Jesus-junkies denouncing everything about LaVey. Why can't people just accept him for what he was; a colorful character with a brilliant philosophical outlook on life. Much can be gained by reading his views, but to make a religion out of it is the greatest trick he ever pulled off.

Summary: HE DESERVES BETTER
Review: The Secret? The Secret is Anton LaVey was no more a Satanistthan the Man in the Moon. Anton LaVey was a Humanist, first andforemost, who, good showman that he was, used the vehicle of "satanism" as a well deserved poke-in-the-eye to the hypocritical, self-indulgent, adolescent Christianized surreal America we all live in. He was, perhaps in spite of himself, a deeply compassionate man who was appalled by the cruelty and duplicity of humanity and sought to satirize and mock it like no one else has. In private, this deeply human and great man, must have been saddened and alarmed that his ideas and Art were an excuse used by over-testeronized young male thugs to justify their self-hatred diatribe-ridden Satanic spin-offs. If you are looking for an objective biography of this incredible man, this ain't it. Maybe one day that book will be written; ... I don't know if you can still get it, but years and years ago you could get a recording of LaVey with his dark, masculine voice playing the organ and singing, (of all things!), "Thanks for the Memories". If by some Satanic miracle you can find this recording, put it on, kick your feet back, pour two glasses of wine for yourself and one in honor of LaVey, and sing along in memory of one the Greatest and Most Original Humanists of all time.

Summary: Secret Life?
Review: There are some things that were "secret" that I did not find in this book. This book does not go into the reasons that Anton LaVey lived the way he did towards the end of his life. His wife beating histrionics cost him his house, and $500,000. His house was "loaned" to him from a friendly real estate agent until he died. LaVey pumped out a many books toward the end of his days to make a buck, and did not appear on many requested news shows because of his health, not to mention his drowned sandpaper voice. The Church of Satan is falling apart from the inside with so much infighting. LaVey was a man who reaped what he sowed, like Crowley, he lost it all, and then some. To those who are thinking about joining the Cos, look with your heart.

Summary: An interesting read, but take it with a pound of salt
Review: This book serves as an introductin to the Satanic philosophy and a "biography" of its illustrious founder, Anton LaVey. Do yourself a favor and dig up the 9/5/91 issue of Rolling Stone at your local library when you're done; it's well worth the effort. The author checked up on LaVey's supposed background and obtained some surprising results.
