Summary: Entertaining, even if a bit exaggerated....
Review: I'm sure most have heard the rumors of false information presented in this book, claiming that much of what is written are out and out lies to further the "legend" of LaVey. Whether these accusations are deserved or not, it does not detract from what is a very entertaining read. While I don't buy some of LaVey's claims, or the magic hocus pocus stuff (curses and the like), I DID completely enjoy the 50% or so of the book focused on LaVey's philosophies (many of which I agree with) and political/cultural views. If you are a fan of the man, his philosophies, or are just plain curious about learning more from and about the force behind the Church of Satan....then this book is a very interesting read.

Summary: Read Jerry Johnston's: Edge of Evil book.
Review: La Vey was a friend of mine, & this book is a repository of special memories. He dictated it during our late nights together, & I heard all these stories first-hand. I always wondered what Blanche was scribbling down so furiously in shorthand--- only later to learn that his annecdotes about Dr. Nixon, et al, would be source material in the story of his life. Still, these stories are inspiring, & I'm grateful to have been a participant in this project on whatever level. La Vey represented what is fabulous about America--- that you can prevail not DESPITE being an outsider, but because of it!

Summary: Anton, we hardly knew ye ...
Review: LaVey was a fascinating character - a scholar of the true occult,"what is hidden". In the '60s he proclaimed himself the founder of the Church of Satan, and probably regretted it for the rest of his life. His philosophy/lifestyle was an intensely personal fusion of humanism, Nietzschean morality, Freudian psychology and carny chutzpah.

I don't know how much of this book is based on fact - it doesn't seem objective, that's for sure - but it's well-written and well worth reading.

Summary: Undoubtedly Biased, Extremely Entertaining!
Review: LaVey was a truly fascinating person. Though one should take much of this book with a grain of salt, it does provide a good deal of information and was very fun to read. I would, however, like to find a neutral "behind the scenes" expose-the-truth type of biography to fill in all the gaps and give the reality behind the propoganda.

Summary: The Biography of the Bishop of Bovine Excreta
Review: No doubt about it, Anton Szandor Lavey, whose real name was Howard Stanton Levey, was an entertainer, a wit, and a junkyard intellectual. Blanche Barton wrote an entertaining piece of factoid in this book--trouble is, most of it ain't necessarily so. The real Lavey (Levey) has been deflated by revelations from his own daughter Zeena, and confirmed by a variety of sources. Still and all, if you like your Nietsche, Ayn Rand, and Crowley watered down and served "sinny" side up, this book will interest you. Even without the fiction of this book, ASL will go down in insignificant history as a card--The Joker.
