Rating: Summary: they cage the animals at night Review: when I read this book i thought that it was very sad. It shows that many people have it vary easy and don't have to have a life like jenning and be moved home to home. After reading this book it showed me that you shouldn't take you life for granted because you could be like jenings and have to live in many home and never have some one to love. That is why I gave this story a 4.
Rating: Summary: Touching Review: I read this book in seventh grade, 10 years ago. It was assigned reading. I almost did not read it because I hate being "assigned" something to read. But I read it and it was so touching and emotional, I was glad I did not buck the system this one time. It stays with me still. In fact, the author came to talk to our school & the kids were overwhelmed. It was a fabulous experience- the book & meeting him. ~Shawn :)

Rating: Summary: A person who as been there writes... Review: I was drawn to the title. Why did they Cage The Animals at Night? This becomes evident as Jennings travels through foster home after home only to believe that his mother will come for him... I dont want to spoil the book and its journeys. At times it is sad, but most of the time you feel happy for Jennings. He is optimistic about his outcome. Along the way he meets many friends, the best one a stuffed animal. This should give you the reader enough to want to purchase this book. This is a book that definetely should be added to everyones book shelf who has been a victim of abuse, whether emotional or physical. I am living proof that adoption and foster homes are not all that bad. I was in many foster home until I was three. I survived.
Rating: Summary: Jennings Burch's They Cage the Animals...Helps Student Review: The student that I have been tutoring is homebound. I have been working with the teachers that he/she would have, if he/she attended school. His/her Language Arts teacher is reading Jennings Burch's "They Cage the Animals at Night" with the middle school English class that my student would be in. I decided to read it with this student; it was a good decision. The sensitive nature of this book touched this student in ways that are difficult to easily explain. Initially the student began empathising with Jennings, and forgetting some of his/her own problems. As we progress through the book, the student is realizing how hard some children have it, and this gave him/her a clearer view of his/her own life, and maybe it wasn't so bad after all.(Many students of this age feel their lives are so awful). Finally, the main message I think that this book imparts, is that some of us are survivors, and will succeed even under the worst of circumstances, especially if we remain focused. My student is still pondering this, and realizing that Jennings is actually a real person, makes the student feel that he/she could use the strength within his/herself as well, to succeed against the adversity in his/her life! Thank you Jennings Burch, for sharing your story with the world.(Note to Teachers: There is some profanity in this book. The Language Arts teacher that is reading this book with her class believes that students of middle school age should be able to cope with reading those words, however, she still took the time to go through each book and white out the swear words...)
Rating: Summary: Breathtaking Review: I read this book with my reading class in the sixth grade. This a wonderful and very touching book. It made me cry when I read about what horrible things he went through. It's a good book and I recomend it to anyone!!!
Rating: Summary: I literally couldn't put this book down! Review: I first read "They cage the animals at night" when I was about 14, and was captivated and enthralled. Burch writes with the candor and knowledge that can only cme from peril and suffering. When he was 8, in the hopeful 1950's, Jennings Micheal Burch was abandoned by his frail mother at a New York Orphanage due to problems with her health. What follows is one heck of a ride for young Jennings, who suddenly must come face to face with all the cold realities of a sometimes very-inhuman world. Bullies, thugs, sadistic punishments, crazy foster parents, the usual assortment of childhood losses and hopes and dreams, physical abuse and, finally, the driving need to love and be loved. Burch writes from his heart and the result is a captivating, magical account of one man's often-scary (but always innocent) childhood. This book is beautiful.
Rating: Summary: Good Book Review: This was a good book and it touched my heart. However, I was looking forward to finishing it only b/c it started to get a little boring. They writer did talk about child abuse but not so indepth that it was hard to read. If you don't like to read stories with such graphic abuse this is a good book to read. If you are looking for something that is a little deeper you may find this book a little boring.
Rating: Summary: ¿It will send you to bed thinking¿¿ Review: They Cage the Animals at Night is a great book. It's about a boy named Jennings Michael Birch, who encounters many tragic events. For example, Jennings' mother went up on the roof to fix her kids' television, falls off and ends up with a broken neck. I really recommend this book to everybody. I recommend it because it's very sad, but happy. It also informs people about many lessons to be learned. This book will send you to bed crying every night, and if not, it will send you to bed thinking: how can so many things happen to an innocent eight-year-old?
