Rating: Summary: If you liked reading Dave Pelzer you will love this book !!! Review: I couldn't put it down and spent a few weeks re-reading each and every word of it. Follow Jennings from his abusive, sick mother's home to the orphanage, back and forth, you will cry when he cries and laugh when he laughs. Every child should read this book by the time they finish middle school. I read it when I was 12 and my only regret was that I had never known about it until then.
Rating: Summary: The best book I've ever read! Review: This book was one of the saddest I have ever read. I am a very unemotional person, but I cried several times while reading this book. They Cage the Animals at Night shocked me into reality. I realized that horrifying things do happen. I think that Jennings Burch is an extremely strong person to have survived through the many portrayed ordeals of neglect, physical abuse, and emotional abuse.
Rating: Summary: Harrowing but believable Review: I feel for Mr. Burch, who shows his courage as a vulnerable young boy who grew into a successful man.Another story lesser known is Ken Grant, a man who has been driven into homelessness and joblessness perhaps by the government itself where he worked at a defense contractor and had a story published about his search for his father. After the story appeared in the newspaper he became chronically unemployable, was denied a decent job with decent health insurance for over 10 years.Grant found state and state subcontractor records santized and perhaps his own book manuscript viewed as a political weapon. Grant wrote an autobiography detailing his own experiences both positive and negative and with a spiritual, not a political, bent. Grant discusses among other things how God led him through his own tribulations as a handicapped, abandoned and abused and neglected youngster in New England. Grant has never been able to get decent work since his own story came out and it has been a question whether political forces have been at work to "teach him a lesson" for 'daring' to offer objective commentary on life in state child care. Grant wrote of triumphs in finding private individuals who cared and his work is a testimony to their caring as much as his own narrative. Grant and Burch have much in common.Grant wrote his book first but Burch succeeded in getting it published where Grant has been the ongoing target of harassment and such.
Rating: Summary: They Cage the Animals At Night Review: This book They Cage the Animals at Night is the best book I have ever read. Now I don't usually read and I'm so glad that my teacher had us read this book because then I would have never found the ONE book that has changed my life. It made me think of how I can change the way these children who don't have a family or any friends can still have a good childhood. Now I'm only 16 years old and before this book I had no idea what I was going to do with my life and after this book now I know what I want to do, I want to help children like Jennings. I think EVERY single high school student should read this book and if your out of High School you also HAVE to read this book.

Rating: Summary: Touches All the Emotions Review: We read this book in a class called Anchor Time in the 8th grade. I was touched by the story. As were many others in the class. Since we read it aloud it had more of a effect. I can also remeber my teacher telling us how the story effected her. This is a great book and it touches all your emotions.
Rating: Summary: They Cage the Animals at Night Review: This is an excellent book. It is very touching and so enjoyable, you never want to put the book down. It makes you realise the truth about life and how even when you struggle, dont give up. I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading nonfictional books. This is one of the best books you'll get a chance to read!
Rating: Summary: They Cage the Animals At Night Review: I like the book They Cage the Animals At Night by Jennings Michael Burch. One of the reasons I like this book is because it was really sad to know about a little boy who got beat and most of his childhood he had to live in orphanages and foster homes because his mother was always sick. This book is a real tragedy. His brothers' were either alcoholics, sick in the hospital, or ran away so he really didn't have anyone. I would recommand this book to anyone who likes books like this one.
Rating: Summary: I love this book!! Review: "They Cage The Animals At Night" is an unbelievable book!!! I just cannot believe a little innocent eight year old boy was so mistreated!! Poor Jennings was abused so much it isn't even funny!! I've read this book about a thousand times and broke out in sobs when I read that part about Jennings' friend dying!! OMG!! People, the ending is so wonderful!! I think Jennings Michael's eleventh year was his best!! If you are someone who cares deeply about child care, this book is a must-read!!
Rating: Summary: they cage the animals at night Review: I enjoyed the book, They Cage the Animals at Night. This autobiographical story is about a young child who is seperated from his brothers and sent to different orphanages, becasue their mother is sick. The nuns are very strict and have no sympathy for an eight year old boy, Jennings. It is about Jennings and his struggles through a series of diffeent orphanage homes, feeling lonely, and frightened. He held on to a stuffed animal who he named Doggie. This book is, as the back cover explains, "The triumphant tale of a little boy who finally gained the courage to reach out for love- and found it waiting for him".. Jennings' unyielding spirit and hope are seemingly contagious as he brings the reader into this brave boys childhood. While reading this autobiographical you will be able to feel sympathy for the kid, wanting to help. And you will feel as if you were going through the experiences with him- the hurt and pain. It is very well written with good details. I am very glad i chose to read this book, and would recommend it to anyone.
