Rating: Summary: tragic, yet beautiful Review: What an amazing journey I encountered with "Sybil". I chose the text for a study trilogy and wow, what a knockout it was. It is almost impossible to believe it were real, but that is the beauty of it, you know that Sybil lived this horrific tale and still came out of it scarred but happy. An inspiration, I hated finishing the book, I wanted to endure Sybil's life for a lot longer. Schreiber has done a wonderful job to bring this text to life, in a sensitive and moving fashion. Cheers, Sybil you give me inspiration and hope!
Rating: Summary: I really didn't want the book to end. Review: This book is so engrossing that I really didn't want it to end. Like an onion, you peel layer after layer, until you reach the "center of the maze." But the journey is astonishing, with ever turn of the page, you really don't know what's going to happen. And of course, Sybil herself. I would one day like meet her, my heroin. Her strength is inspirational.
Rating: Summary: Loved the book as well as the movie! Review: This book is a must to read. I saw the movie "Sybil" in 1977 with Sally Field and Joanne Woodward. Sally Field played "Sybil" and did a very good job of it. If anyone knows how to get the video please contact me. I want to buy it. It is very hard to find.
Rating: Summary: Incredible story! Cannot believe it isn't fiction! Review: The story speaks for itself. A woman with 16 perosnalities? Almost unbelievable. Schreiber relates the story in a factual manner, and presents it so it moves quickly. I believe the actual story is what makes the novel so captivating, not Schreiber's writing. It isn't very sophisticated, but that is certainly forgotten. You are far too busy tracing Sybil's life from her childhood days in Willow Corner to Dr. Wilbur's office in New York City. A truly fascinating novel worth every minute spent reading it.
Rating: Summary: am I the only one who dislikes Wilbur? Review: In this book, Cornelia Wilbur really irritates the life out of me. She expects lots of drama from Sybil. And she gets it. What if Wilbur had said, when Sybil first started dramatically switching, "hey, let's try to get you stabilized here". Then she would have been a much more responsible therapist. But there would have been no famous book, because the case of Sybil would have put the audience to sleep.
Rating: Summary: Very true and close to my own experience as an MPD Review: I read this book following my own recovery from multiple personality disorder. It is frighteningly close to my own experiences growing up in an abusive family. When people read this book, they should take notice and realize the long-lasting pain that can result from child abuse!
Rating: Summary: Extremely interesting story of "Sybil's" tramatic early life Review: I read this book for the first time over 20 years ago before child abuse was an "everyday" word and many in depth studies had been completed. "Sybil's" story influenced my decision to study psychology. The book provides a look into the life, development and healing of a very troubled child and young woman. Answers some questions about how individuals handle tramatic childhood events and situations. I recently found out that "Sybil" passed away in Febuary 1998 here in Lexington, KY at the age of 75. She lived in Lexington since the late 70's.
Rating: Summary: Understanding of Multiple personalities Review: Sybil is an infomative book about the turmoils of a person dealing with multiple personalities. To acually realize that such a thing can occur is breath taking. And to acually be able to understand the mind process of thing that are happening in the persons life is a wonderful thing to learn about
Rating: Summary: tragic storty. One of the greatest books ever. Review: The story of Sybil tells the story of every one of us. Every one of us . Fighting yourself, your own true. We try to ignore it.That's our way of dealing. Sybil found another way. She escaped. We call her crazy. Although it's us that are crazy. We just cant see it. A marvelous book.
Rating: Summary: A triumph for "ONE" slender, fragile woman.... Review: The story of Sybil is an incredible testimony to the inner strength that humans possess. An only child, Sybil was horribly abused and traumatized by her diagnosed schizophrenic mother as an infant and child, and her father, not accepting his wife's diagnosis, was in denial. Although many in the community sensed there was something amiss in the Dorset household, no one could rescue Sybil, but Sybil herself. By splintering her psyche into 16 different Personalities, Sybil "escaped" the torment and survived. And, this oppressed but brilliant, gifted individual managed to nurture her extraordinary talent and worked hard to make her dreams of becoming an artist come true. SYBIL is the best true story I've ever read and re-read - at least 5 times, maybe more. I always wonder where she is now, and if she ever married. My sincere wish for Sybil is that she has peace of mind and a happy life.
