Summary: One Major Fault
Review: Although I don't fall into the age-range of the typical Loveline caller, I find the show to be entertaining and the role Dr. Pinsky has assumed as guidance counselor to young listeners fairly worthwhile. This book is readable primer for those who know little about addiction, and should not be judged too harshly for its "lack of depth" as I've seen in reviews here.

Its an unfortunate fact that Alcoholics Anonymous and other 12 step cults are so widely accepted as central in addiction recovery. The good work Dr. Pinsky does educating young listeners is largely negated by his propagating the poisonous philosophy of these groups to a new generation. AA is a multi-million dollar scam that recruits addicts and their loved ones alike, declaring they will always be "sick" and must attend meetings forever or risk certain disaster. Members are trained to give up rational thinking and to identify themselves as "powerless" over their addiction. To hold beliefs other than those taught is to be in "denial".

It is typical that funding for addiction facilities such as that Pinsky works in be on the condition they promote the 12 steps as part of "recovery". (This sort of policy-making is often drawn up those who themselves are AA members.) I would hope a reasonable man like Dr. Drew would refuse to subscribe to the tenets of these harmful people. To the degree this book suggests 12 step philosophy as a way out from under the morass of addiction, it fails addicts and their families' alike.

Summary: Everybody must read this book.
Review: As an avid listener of Loveline, I heard Dr. Drew Pinsky plugging his book on the air night-after-night. I do not read many books, but this book sounded appealing, so I bought it, and I don't regret it.

Dr. Drew Pinsky takes us into his life, beyond what we hear from him on Loveline with Adam Corolla, to experience the touching, the heart-breaking, stories from just some of the patients that visit his detox clinic everyday, what kind of pain they feel, the struggles they face, and the feelings they experience. I enjoyed reading what Dr. Drew's personal thoughts are about these patients, addicts, or even their visitors. This is really a life-changing book, and the story of Amber really peaked my interest, and tugged at my heart.

This book is very well written about a subject that, over the last decade alone, has become part of many lives each day. Dr. Drew, this was an excellent book, and I would recommend it to everyone, as I have already recommended it to many.

Summary: Don't listen to them Dr. Drew!
Review: I listen to your show every nignt you are a passionate, passionate man. Don't let these "A" holes get you down, they obviously cant relate to what you have to say because they are in denial themselves, everyone has problems. Keep up the good work, and keep on writing those books! You really are helping a lot of people.

Summary: Helps me to understand...
Review: This book helped me to understand that I am really no different from an addict. I can no longer look down on addicts and alcoholics, because but for the accident that I didn't inherit the biology, I would be one. Everyone with an alcoholic or addict in the family (or friends) should read this book.

Summary: Never Play Leap Frog With a Unicorn
Review: I picked up the book after watching Dr. Drew on a late night show. The most profound statement in the book was the definition of "mentally healthy". After a mental journey of ups and downs in Dr. Drews' life and his patients you come across this wonderful paragraph. Like me may not have ever tried a drug in your life, but everyone has bad things that happen to them.

Thank you Dr. Drew. Thank you for sharing your compassion, and gift with me. It is amazing how one little thing can be profound to one person, but overlooked by millions. I guess for me realizing that it is perfectly acceptable to feel not-so-great when you are dealing with bad things - that was when I "got it".

Summary: Drew's voice isn't just for the radio
Review: Dr. Drew has a strong writing voice in this book, and that, more than anything, is why this is a great read. We've all read about how drugs and alcohol ruin lives, but Dr. Drew finds the reasons behind the abuse, just like he does all the time on Loveline. At times on his show it seems like he's always asking the callers questions about their parents, and I thought he was just looking for an easy answer in the few minutes he can spend with them. But thanks to his strong narration, it's easy to see why he asks those questions. Quite honestly I thought the hardest part of his job was putting up with Adam (who is brilliant and funny, but can you imagine being his partner?). In fact it's finding hope in the bleak landscape that is his job.
Drew is more than willing to share his faults, too, probably at the expense of a tounge-lashing from his wife (if in fact Adam is at all right about her). It's what makes the book truly special is he doesn't put himself on a pedestal. It's probably what makes him so good at his job and why he's a good radio host: He acknowledges his own faults and refuses to put himself above his patients. His compassion for his subjects without babying them shines through. Drew also isn't afraid to attack the insurance industry (which deserves it) and his own medical community while also blaming himself for some of the problems.
This is an honest, sometimes heartbreaking and compelling read, and it should be read by anyone facing the problems Drew describes on Loveline every night. It could be that source of inspiration for more people to "get it."

Review: I have been listening to Dr Dru on loveline for several years now and have come to respect him highly! When I heard that he was writing a book I set myself to make sure to not only buy it but read it(what an idea huh?) After reading this book I have to say this: I respect Dr Dru now more then ever, Not only has he let us the reader get a small glimpse of his own history but he nails home several key facts about the over all subject, This disease called addiction, I encourage every one to buy this book, even if you think that you do not need to learn about this subject I guarantee that everyone will come away feeling that they have learned something!....and make sure to tune into loveline!!!!

Summary: You guys don't get it...
Review: For all the people who said this book was pointless and had no real meaning, then you guys obviously are not the ones to be reading these kind of books and making judgements on them. Also to the ones that critisized this book: you guys did not get the point of this book, maybe, if you had an actual addiction and not just reading it because Dr. Drew is famous then you would find this book more of a comfort.....Think about it for a while, and see what the real point of this book is :) (I am sure you can handle that, or can you?)
