Summary: Compassionate & Loving Book
Review: Recently saw a short TV interview with Rachel Remen. I had not heard of her or her books before and I was struck by her genuinely compassionate non-judging demeanor. Soon after, read this book and found it matched my impression from the interview. I found it so special that I have since bought and given away 4 copies of it to friends and family.

My reaction was very similar to most of those of reviewers here. In addition I was moved by her compassion for her fellow physicians, how the need to appear professional isolate them from others including their colleagues. One story is about two doctors from same office each suffering from a serious illness and not knowing the other was also seeing her. Both felt they could not discuss with the other the things they were discussing with her.

Summary: Dr. Remen is a Blessing
Review: Several friends had told me about Kitchen Table Wisdom over the years, and I just put off purchasing it. Then while recovering in the hospital from surgery, the chaplin suggested I read it. I read it during my recovery and have not stopped reading it since. There are so many lessons in the book, and Dr. Remen's selection of stories and writing style present an education on how to be human and to develop a deeper understanding of the humanity each one of us posseses. I look at my life, and those around me in a different way since I read the book. Dr. Remen has taught me that we all have the capacity to make our life a blessing and she is truly a blessing to all that read her words.

Summary: Stories that Heal
Review: This beautiful, touching and life- altering book is without doubt one of the best books I've read. Dr.Remen captured my mind, heart and soul from the very first page. The stories she tells about herself, her patients, her family and friends are told with amazing honesty, beauty and grace. This book is about Life with all its different facets, phases and seasons. As a physician, reading this book has made a lot of impact on how I view my role and how I communicate with my patients. I now think of myself not as a "doctor" but as a healer, and know that there is much more to my work than diagnosing diseases and prescribing medicines. I read this book many times, and every time I laugh and I cry and I am inspired and touched. This book is truly one of a kind; it is worth a million stars!!

Summary: Compassionate Book by Physician with Chronic Illness
Review: This bestseller is written with compassion by a physician with Crohn's disease since her early teens. She writes about the anger she felt at soon after her diagnosis at age 15 and how she later realized that her will to live life fully was stornger than she ever imagined and provided her with the motivation to achieve her goals. Simply the fact that she became an M.D. in the face of adversity is an inspiration! Intermingled with her own experiences, Dr. Remen relates her efforts to help others heal from and cope with life disrupting illnesses. Her stories really motivate and help you develop the faith to heal yourself, and once healed to reach out and help others. I highly recommend this book!

Summary: Dr. Rachel Remen writes on journey toward healing.
Review: This book by Dr. Remen is a collection of short vignettes cataloging her personal journey as a healer who has struggled personally with all the issues concerning healing both as a patient and as a medical doctor/counselor. Simple, elegant, and poignant, the reader experiences with Dr. Remen as she shares her dealings with patients, other doctors, and herself. Wisdom and lessons for the living abound in this jewel of a book. This is the kind of book you will find yourself reading and re-reading as you will find true inspiration every time you pick it up. A must read for anyone who counsels or thinks of themself as a healer

Summary: A touching guide to the spiritual side of recovery.

Summary: Suprising
Review: This book was recommended by an admissions dean during a medical school interview. When I went to purchase it and found it under the "alternative medicine" section, I found myself groaning in disgust.

Keeping an open mind, I purchased and read the book anyway. It was refreshing and straightforward. Dr. Remen passes along her wisdom from personal & professional experiences by using anecdotal evidence that is charming and to the point.

Summary: A book that can be lived.
Review: This is not a "read"--it's a "ponder." A book that will slow you down and sink into your soul as you awaken to the common inner world we all share no matter how varied our stories may seem. Dr. Remen is a wise, deeply loving woman and above all, a gifted listener. This book not only shares some of the stories she treasures, it also opens up the art of listening and shows how profoundly rewarding that can be--not only for the listener, but for those who are truly heard. A genuinely spiritual and tenderly human gift, this book can be not only read but lived

Summary: Heals the soul
Review: This is one of those books that you come back to again and again when you need good advice or some healing words in your life. I had the fortune of being taught by Rachel Remen as one of her medical students. Her wisdom taught me more about practicing medicine than any other course in my 4 years of medical school. This is one of those books you keep on your nightstand at all times. Even my less-than-spiritual father couldn't put it down!

Summary: Yes these stories can actually heal
Review: When I'm feeling really bad about my chronic illness or other things in my life, the stories in this book help me keep going. Dr. Remen is a wonderful story teller and an amazingly creative healer. She uses guided imagery in skillful and loving ways to help clients and readers see the meaning and strengths in their lives.

I admit to bias. Rachel Remen wrote the blurb for the back of my book, The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Illness. But I was a fan of hers before and since, too. Her other books are also excellent.
