Rating: Summary: Entertaining Read - Good for a Graduate Review: I found this book to be interesting and entertaining, but not overly insightful. I did learn lots about Maria and have changed my views on her a bit - I was definitely one of the many who thought her network career was handed to her on a silver platter. I enjoyed the book and, as a 32-year-old working mother, could really relate to it. But most of her points are fairly obvious and superficial. This book is probably best suited for her original audience: college graduates - although I recently purchased it for a high school grad as well. It's worth reading and most of my friends have loved it.
Rating: Summary: Just like talking to a trusted friend or big sister! Review: "Ten Things I Wish I'd Known . . ." is a poignant, down-to-earth, and at times laugh-out-loud book that will potentially help people of all ages and on all roads in life. Shriver gives us her reflections, confessions, advice, memories, and, most of all, hard-earned lessons, all the things we wish we'd known before we started out, and that few people ever honestly discuss. Reading this is almost like talking to your big sister. I plan to give out lots of these for graduation presents.
Rating: Summary: Ten Things I Wish I'd Known:Before I Went Out into the Real Review: My daughter graduated from The College of the Holy Cross and Maria Shriver gave this speech at her graduation. After attending many college graduations I thought I had heard it all. This was by far the best speech. The useful and practical information was terrific. I purchased many copies for graduation gifts. I highly recommend this book for all young adults entering the "real" world.
Rating: Summary: Good old fashioned horse sense... Review: I was very impressed with the excerpts that I've read from this book. I always considered Maria a shallow, privileged liberal, just like a typical Kennedy, but I can see now why a conservative like Arnold could fall for her. She has obviously had a very good upbringing and she states a lot of positive truths in her book.Growing up in a dysfunctional family background, I never learned the things that she talks about, such as going after your dreams and persevering in the face of adversity. Now that I'm 41, I finally have the confidence to start applying some of these principles in my life. I think this would be an excellent teaching tool for a mother to share with her young daughter. If all children were taught some of these basic principles, then there wouldn't be so many confused, lost, unconfident young people out there trying to find their way in the world.
Rating: Summary: Ten reasons to be born a Kennedy Review: I scanned this book for about twenty seconds before flinging it back on the best-seller table at Borders. Only a silly child of a privileged American dynasty could write such dribble. Aristocratic Europeans would hestitate to so boldly offer advice on how to succeed at life when your own contribution is mostly to be spring from a blessed womb. I very much doubt that little Maria has ventured very far into the "real world," and I doubt very much that anyone could think of ten good reasons to buy this ridiculous book, unless you are a combination self-help addict and Kennedy sycophant. (Of course, I forget that many, if not most Americans fit into at least one of these pathetic categories, so that may explain why this is a best seller.)
Rating: Summary: Great book for Life Skills classrooms Review: I am an instructor in a welfare-to-work program. Presently I am using this book to explain many life skills. Each client has been assigned a chapter to read and summarize for the class. I am trying to emphasize the idea of finding a passion in life (your first chapter). That is the secret to a happy, contented life. It has also been an eyeopener for them to hear that even Maria Shriver can fail at something, and then go on to succeed. Thank you for writing this book. It has been enjoyable, as well as helpful. Michele:)
Rating: Summary: Not surprised Review: I was not surprised by the contents of this book. I just saw an interview Maria was giving this morning on a major network news program, and the phrase "we need to celebrate everyones choices" came out of her mouth. My answer to that phrase was, "what if I don't agree with your choices"? This book like most celebrity/self-centered publications celebrate "me" and what I've done. It shouts "you should celebrate/support me for being selfish and self-centered and entering a profession that's obviously biased, has no problem telling lies, and slighly narrow-minded, in it's views". Not to far from politics. Responsibility is more important than choices and rights, (what about being a mother, full-time) once you make the responsible choice, the best choice for all involved (and yes someone is not going to be happy) then we'll have a healthier society. We need to strive for this in our lives constantly. Maria thanks for staying true to the Kennedy legacy, you're still in the news, even reporting it the NBC way, not the way it really happened.
Rating: Summary: Very enjoyable and informative book! Review: Maria Shriver is a woman of many gifts and one of them is writing,,her book is enjoyable to read. Maria's warm heart and love show through in her writing, you know that she deeply cares about you THE READER and society. I enjoy the humanness of her book,,the message is,,we DON'T have to be perfect,we learn from mistakes and grow from them,we learn our strengths and weaknesses because NO ONE is good at everything and is that EVER true!...we don't have to be a clone of the next person,we can be ourselves and benefit our lives and society from self knowledge and trying, that is the greatest message, keep trying and don't give up because you WILL find your place in the world. I think Maria Shiver is the best role model I've seen for all women. She's a combination of love, faith, hope, strength and endurance, and her upbeat look at life can sure help you when you're down. Great book for men too, because everyone can learn from a woman who knows what it's all about ..... ...TRYING!...and NOT giving up,if you're not so good at one thing, you learn from it and find what you are good at.
Rating: Summary: Yeah Maria! Review: Great book! I,m a 57 year old business owner.(female) I thouroghly enjoyed the book. An easy read that tells us about Maria and some great tips on life. I gave it to my 32 Yr. old daughter who runs a business and she enjoyed it too. Great book. Thanks Maria!
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your time Review: This book is not worth your time. As a recent college graduate, I bought the book, thinking some of Maria's insights might hit close to home. Instead, I found pages clogged with run-on sentences, and life lessons that were not insightful at all. Her "woah is me" attitude got old, as all of her stories of mistakes ultimately ended in self-praise. The book was entirely self-serving, and any reasonably intelligent person with some experience under his/her belt is alreadly well aware of Maria's pearls of wisdom. This Kennedy child should return to the Hilltop for another writing course and some much-needed grounding.
