Rating: Summary: Overrated Review: Initially I enjoyed reading the book as well as the full CD set that I listened to many times over. Later on, after my initial enthusiasm wore off, I realized that I was just seeking a diversion from the painful circumstances I was then facing. Well, the painful circumstances have passed, I'm still suffering somewhat in its aftermath and now I realize that the NOW and all this talk about the PRESENT MOMENT is way, way, way overrated.Anyone can see that the NOW has a way of intruding on our present reality whether we want it to or not, we stub our toe, we get pulled over for speeding, someone cuts us off in traffic, we sneeze, we have to go to the bathroom, and so on. What's the big deal about the NOW? Unless I am completely missing the point of Eckhart Tolle's work, I fail to grasp the advantage of staying in the NOW.
Rating: Summary: A powerful book Review: I read "The Power of Now" almost two years ago and I still think about it because it changed my life and my way of thinking. It taught me that to really be part of life and living is to live in the moment. Living in the moment brought me in touch with the beauty that exists in the world instead of the noise in my head. Connecting with the beauty in the world showed me that there is indeed a God and that if I choose to live in the moment I too would some day be living a life of beauty. I took this message very seriously and now two years later, I see the manifestation and the transformation that has occured in my life simply by choosing to live in the moment. I took in this book one paragraph at a time in order to really understand it and even though it took me several months to finally make it to the last page, it was well worth it. Since then I have come across another book that has had such an impact on me called "Soul Power" by Nikki De Carteret. She takes the power of living in the moment to the next level and shows you how to transform all that spiritual beauty into a deep love. One life changing book leads to the next and many have come between these two, but for now, they are bookends to my current spiritual journey: start out by being in life and confirm it by loving life.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding book (Audio CD) and great message Review: I got the unabriged CDs of this book and found it entirely transforming. I really loved most of this book. It was as though Eckhart was speaking to me. The only reason I give it 4 stars is there are a few things that I do not like about the book. In some ways I believe he inadvertantly fuels some stereotypes. I will give one example to demostrate my point (paraphrasing): "... heterosexual men find it more difficult to experience enlightment than women and Gay men...or...." That is a ignorant statement. In someways it can be true because an ignorant person can be cut of from themselves but Not every heterosexual man is a beer guzzling, chest pounding idiot who would ignorately say this stuff is "for fags.." . I am what one would consider extremely hetero: I enjoy football, lifting weights and at the same time enjoy spiritual teachings. I just hate the stereotype that you cannot be in touch with yourself if you are a man. It is pervasive and damaging. Especially to young boys growing up... Anyway.... All in all the positives from this book far outweigh the negatives. Nothing is perfect. But by not being perfect it is somehow perfect, because really nothing is perfectable. Bottom line: Buy it because I think anyone has the potential of learning a great deal from this book. Peace!
Rating: Summary: Stop living in the past. Review: Amazing! I knew before reading this book I was living in the past and future, but reading this opened my eyes so much I was shocked. It's been a month since I finished reading "THE POWER OF NOW", and believe it or not, by practicing just a little of what I read in this book I haven't had any depression episodes AT ALL (I use to have them every hour of the day!). To say this book changed my life is an understatement. I'm not going to say this book is for everyone, but it's my belief if you're living in the past and doing nothing but worrying about the future (even about things that may never happen!) this book is the best thing you can buy for yourself, it will definitely make you realize a thing or two. "THE POWER OF NOW" is in my top five favorite books (maybe even at the top). Fire your therapist, flush the psych pills down the toilet, just read this.
Rating: Summary: This is the book I have been waiting for Review: This is one of the books I have been waiting for. It explains at great length with regard to the concept of ego. If you have a lot of weird behaviours that you yourself cannot understand why you do so, this book is the answer. What a wonderful work!
Rating: Summary: can seeking be an addiction Review: I have the book and the tapes..It is hard to let go of the seeking identity... something that had brought me closer to other seekers.. and initially, it was comforting to be around others who were seeking.. To hear that the seeking identity kept me from finding seemed at first incomprehensible.. but then.. the mind always finds a way to stay busy..excuses to stay in the drivers seat...so it was just perfect that my mind would come right in to defend the seeking.... laughing out loud at how what gets you there is a thing you must let go of.. 10,000 things.. one at a time.. or all at once.. I listen to the tapes in my car.. The words float in and out without effort and what sticks sticks.. no hurry, nothing is lost..I play them again and hear something I didn't hear before.. In a traffic tie-up, I rejoice that I can relax and enjoy the tapes instead of fretting... the tapes will be one of the last things I give up..(I gave away my book in the course of Miracles, which suddenly seemed overly complex) thank you for writing something that is accessable (language), practical(actually works), this book has been very good news for me.. Rating: Summary: Deeply powerful book - but it's just the beginning Review: I read this book about six months ago and was very profoundly affected. I then gave it to my husband and a close friend, and they were profoundly affected. It resonated very deeply and left a quiet, peaceful influence that lasted for quite some time. However, in retrospect, I see it was just the beginning. The author implies that the only thing we need to do become enlightened or release us from our problems is to be in the Now, but I believe it is more involved than that. I did find myself reaching states of peace by being in the Now, but eventually I found myself asking, Now What?
Rating: Summary: Enjoyment Review: I was given this book as a gift. Once I started reading it I couldnt put it down. Whole lot of things to think about here
Rating: Summary: Amazing, simply amazing! Review: I started my spiritual search several years ago with authors such as Wayne Dyer and Tony Robbins. These authors have been great for personal growth and have helped me improve my life situation through self-motivation and achieving goals. Wayne Dyer also mentions concepts such as "you are complete already" but I didn't truly understand what he meant at the time. The first time I listened (I have the CDs) to the Power of Now, the concepts that Eckhart spoke about was new to me but something inside me clicked. I listened to the CDs again and again. It took several passes before I finally grasped what Eckhart Tolle is refers to when he talks about Being/It/God. He shows you the path on how to connect with It and does an excellent job on describing it on a conceptual level. It's amazing. As a spiritual seeker, I've come to learn that what I do for a living, how much money I have, and the car I drive don't make me who I am. But after reading the book, I realize now that I only knew this statement to be true on an intellectual level. After reading this book, you will realize, TRULY realize, why this statement is true. There is a difference between knowing it intellectually and living it and being it. This is possible when you discover who you really are. This book helps you with this discovery. Tony Robbins will help you achieve your wants and desires, whereas Eckhart Tolle will show you that nothing of this world can fulfill you and that every want and desire is a search for yourself. When you realize this, you no longer have any wants or desires. I also own and recommend his other books Stillness Speaks and Practicing the Power of Now. He also makes reference to other books you might want to check out such as "Loving What Is" by Byron Katie (www.thework.com) and "A Course in Miracles". Gangaji (www.gangaji.org) is another author you might want to check out. "You find God when you no longer have to seek God."
Rating: Summary: Great Book, Live in the Present Review: After reading many many books by several empowering authors such as Deepak Chopra, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Dalai Lama, and Tiffany Snow, that I am still reading, my life has opened up to me in such a compelling and wonderful way. This new book is well written, and thought provoking. There are great transforming authors, who shift the consciousness of humankind in a way never known before. The "Power of Now" is one of those.
