Summary: hmmmm
Review: Glancing over some previous reviews, I am truly happy to hear there were some people who experienced some kind of relief from the book; I cannot say the same for myself. To be frank, Tolle's so called "enlightenment" experience is where my I first grew skeptical of his work. I simply was not buying it, which for me drew into question the entire book's authenticity. Tolle needed a better editor, for I would have placed his "enlightenment story" at the end; I mean no spiritual writer needs to prove they "got it" with a literal account! Their words should do all the explaining and proving. I don't even know what Eckhart meant when he said he experienced enlightenment. Was it this affirmation of the "now?" Now is not special, nothing is special. Don't make special, then you already have enlightenment.

High and low, enlightened and not enlightened. All hot air. If you really want to get to the matter of things, PUT IT ALL DOWN and ONLY GO STRAIGHT. Those are the words of the 78th Zen Patriarch Seung Sahn, who's book "The Compass of Zen" you can find here on Amazon. If you are experiencing a kind of crisis in your life, or "looking and searching" for some sort of answer, his book will point you on your way. The Power of Now only touches the surface of things, while Seung Sahn will cut to the straight to the bone. Don't believe me? Then don't believe me, order this book instead. Who knows?-you may end up benefiting from it. But at the very least pick up The Compass while your at it, and you tell me who understands. You tell me who can cut to the heart of a matter. In short, who's the Zen master? Take care my friends.

Summary: Listen to your heart, not the reviewers (including me)
Review: I've noticed that some criticize Tolle for "expanding" the book or making it too long. But as Tolle himself notes, the book is written in a Q&A format where he tries to answer the same questions from different perspectives. Tolle also points out that the basic premise is not complicated, it just takes focus and practice. Others criticize Tolle for the impossible task of translating a mystical experience with words. Well, how else was he supposed to do it? Are there "mystical" media channels out there he should be communicating through?

I have read endless numbers of books on finding oneself, reaching enlightenment, and so on, and none have rung true like Tolle's book. I have given it to many friends as a gift and only one found it difficult to grasp, the rest were deeply moved. But don't listen to me or others, check it out at the library, listen to it or read it and judge for yourself. As Tolle notes, he isn't "teaching" you anything - he's reminding you what you already know. Give it a try - it may indeed change your life.

Summary: this book is the truth
Review: This book is the truth, or as close as words can describe the truth. If you really are tired of pain and want to acheive this beautifull peace, this book points to how to get it.
Indeed, partly due to this book I entered this state of peace for a year or two.
But do you really want it? That is the 64 million dollar question. If you really want spiritual enlightenment, just let it happen, and it will come.

Summary: This is a you-won't-be-sorry book
Review: Sound too woo-woo for you? Not to worry, Tolle writes in an upfront way. His writing is a bit circular (comes back to its premise over and over), which some may find challenging, but I found helpful. For those who like it short and sweet, try "Practicing the Power of Now" (his follow-up book) instead.

Summary: Wish I could say that I liked it...
Review:
I actually purchased two copies of this book after
hearing Oprah Winfrey rave about it on one of her
recent shows... ("If you only read one book this
year, make sure it's this one!")

Sadly, I have to agree with the other reviewers
who were disappointed with it...

Eckhart Tolle does make one good point -- that it
can be truly refreshing to "step away from" yourself
mentally, and spend some time "observing" yourself
and your life circumstances objectively...

But then he spends roughly another 200 pages
restating the same point over and over...

A much better book on this very topic is titled
"Shadow Syndromes," by John J. Ratey, MD, a
researcher and psychiatrist...

His book goes into goes into the actual mechanics
of the mind, and does a much better job explaining
the technique of mentally "observing yourself"
when you want to break the grip of an unhealthy
mind-set...

I would read that book, before I'd read
this one...

I read the book and than got the audio books. The audio Cd's helped so much. If you only read one book this year, read this book. It is a important book. NOW is all there is and all there will ever be.

Summary: Life Changing Book for Me
Review: I would hate to see a couple of negative spotlight reviews dissuade anyone from considering this book. Some people connect with it, some don't.
The Power of Now has made a HUGE difference in my life. Since I first read this book two years ago, my mind activity and emotions have substantially calmed and my underlying resistance level has dropped. My relationship with my wife has gone from gridlock to a sense of newness and discovery. I have ocassionally shifted into a state of awareness I can only describe as peace, grace, or presence.
Tolle cautions readers from the start not to conceptualize the material and try to create more "mind stuff". There's nothing in this book to learn, memorize, believe, or not believe. The words themselves have the power to awaken consciousness in those who are ready and open.
This is the most powerful book I have ever read and has been truly liberating for me. Thank you, Eckhart Tolle.

Summary: You will re-read it
Review: Thought provoking. I put this by my favorite books, so that I can reference it and re-read. The power of now is a re-read book, so is anything by Wayne Dyer and Tiffany Snow. There are just some words a person needs in their lifetime, and these are it. I don't loan these out to anyone else! They're too precious.

Summary: Now is all there is!
Review: The Power of Now is a terrific book which helps us to understand that running away from the present moment is tantamount to running away from life. This book moves us toward acceptance of the present moment and life, even if it isn't great. Being in the now makes us fully present in life. This book is worth the money for sure. Strongly recommended also is Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self, a brilliant book for showing us how simple it is to put our best self in charge of our lives and how to make the most of everything that comes our way.
