Rating: Summary: This book has changed my life! Review: When this book was recommended to me I thought, "great, another book to read." But when I started reading it, I couldn't put it down - it was as if I were parched and the words were life-giving water - I really did need to read this book! The most transformational part of this book for me was the advice that if there is something in your life situation that you do not like you have three choices: change the situation by taking action or speaking out, leave it, or accept it. By practicing this, my whole world has changed immediately - my relationships with extended family and friends have changed, the way I view my life has changed and I'm having more fun with my children and my husband, and in life in general. In one week, six people had asked me if I lost weight. My clothes still fit, so I think it's the weight of all the negativity I've been releasing. Another important change I've made as a result of this book is to be able to distinguish between my true being and my mind - that I AM my being and NOT my mind. What freedom to realize that I am no longer the prisoner of my thoughts. Thank you Mr. Tolle!
Rating: Summary: Sad Review: How sad that so many who have reviewed the book here missed its message. I choose not to resist, but the ramifications of this collective unconsciousness present a bleak picture for humankind. Tolle certainly is a mystic for our Now. I am grateful for his honest and unapologetic revelation of Truth in this magnificent book.
Rating: Summary: One Of The Greatest Books Ever Written Review: Just got through reading "The Power of Now". I've read all the spiritual classics: "I Am That", Vivekananda, Yogananda, Adi Da Samraj, Ramana Maharshi, Ram Dass's "Be Here Now", Shankara and Vedanta, Buddha, all the major religions, Rajneesh/Osho, "The Impersonal Life", and they are all very good to great but this book is by far one of the most clear and practical. Maybe I was just ready, but the book gives direct and specific instruction for entering "THE NOW" in plain, modern day, unpretentious language. Some of the other spiitual books, though not all, used either too much indecipherable parable, ancient language, excessive moralizing, or had a non-western view point that made application unclear. I sometimes only got fuzzy, ephemeral glimpses of the here and now. In contrast, this book just hammers you into the here and now like a sledge hammer busting up the deluded mind, the dysfunctional mind, the neurotic mind, the desperate mind, the lost mind, the angry and confused mind, like a boulder dropped into a pond we drop to the bottom of the here and now. At first the plain western looking cover with a white guy on the inside back flap didn't look impressive. It looked like some sort of self help, psychotherapy pap. The author was not from India so what credibility does he have? Every one knows that the East has the metaphysics thing down to a science. Western psychology is just superficial rearranging of neurosis. They have no idea what enlightenment is. Only yogis, swamis or spiritual masters can open the doors to enlightenment. Plus the author said his enlightenment or realization was sudden. He did not appear to have prepared through meditation, but in the midst of a personal crisis this white guy suddenly figures it all out! Come on! But looks are deceiving. This guy knows what he's talking about. Now that I think about it, Ramana Maharshi had a similar unexpected realization of the truth. The author makes no claims to any religious tradition or spiritual, path yet in light of the understanding uncovered in this book, many previously cryptic spiritual parables become clear. There are few examples of this given by the author. BE WISE. Don't wait for a disaster to strike to be forced into accepting the here and now. Do it NOW. Read this book again and again until it sinks in. I'm glad there are so many good reviews. The more people who utilize these teaching the saner our world will be. I'm going to buy the CD to listen to while in the car.
Rating: Summary: The Power of Now Review: The concept that "we live in the now" is something I believe in. The delivery of the audio would have put me to sleep if I continued to listen past CD #1 and I wasn't driving. I do not recommend this book to anyone interested in getting motivated for personal growth.
Rating: Summary: Alarming reviews Review: ... I liked the book very much. It compliments my own religious beliefs. It is an inexpensive book, well worth the price and time to read and take what works for you out of it. The immediate benefit for me has been learning to identify the emotion behind my reactions and having my response truly reflect who I am, not necessarily the emotion I am feeling at the time. I recommend this book to anybody who needs ideas on achieving more peace in life.
Rating: Summary: The Power of Now Review: I enjoyed this book very much. Living in the moment is such an important concept which we don't do in this day and age. This book helps ground that out nicely. The book was easy to read and progressed nicely. One book that I think would complement this book beautifully is The Lost Teachings of Atlantis by Jon Peniel. It continues where this book leaves off. I recommend both.
Rating: Summary: 5 Stars - I don't need to see the wind to consider it real. Review: Let the rant begin... My comments are based on earlier reviews! I must admit, I have not read this book. However, I have read all the reviews and I was amazed at how closed minds join together. I would bet the author has made some statements that the ego is created for the purpose of contrast, as dark is in contrast to light. I would also bet that folks found it very difficult to accept that what they experience is illusion. Heck, if I went around telling people of a person that had the power to heal others, could work miracles, turn water into wine these same people would say I was unstable. They might even say I was telling lies. Every negative review sounds like they were written by the same people that once said "the world is flat". Is that because the only see what they believe? I must get and read this book! I find these closed-minded indiviuals (and some having a practice) to be very scarey. Like followers of a single mind, believing only what they see and hear. Isn't that just like the masses that followed Hitler? This book may be full of [junk]. Then again, it may contain information to complex for those locked into only what their senses can detect. I hope their are more colors than my eyes can see, more sounds (dog whistle) than my ears can hear. Sorry for the rant. I was shocked to see such limited minds marching in unison, yet afraid to admit there may be more than what their limited brains can comprehend. I will follow up with an educated review after I read the book.
Rating: Summary: can you see what he sees? Review: Mr Tolle has put together a fine little selfhelp book for the spiritual seeker who wants his/her texts in modern lingo. the book does touch on many old and some new ideas to help the reader be more and see more than perhaps he/she has before. the author does not rise to the soaring teaching intensity of a vivekananda or a d t suzuki. he does manage, however, to tell some things well worth the telling, i.e., the individual ego must be transcended before you/we can really SEE the grand reality of our true basis and origin: spirit. and he does give some great clues about where and how to look. there is a lot here that's worth your time and attention to consider. the style may well resonate with your particular taste. as a great alternative try ramana maharshi or nisargadatta maharaj.
Rating: Summary: One of the best books in print Review: Casteneda Translated. A modern Tao de Ching! Answers to all the worlds problems!
Rating: Summary: Danger Review: I am a clinical psychologist and I would not recommend this to anyone. It is very reprimanding and illogical. Not only that but the author has a dangerous ego that can persuade undeveloped minds into his think and ONLY his thinking. This is very dangerous since the author himself seems to be of unstable mindset himself. Please for your mental health don't waste your money!
