Rating: Summary: A compelling life-story and informative book Review: Read this book. Then, if you have read the Horse & Rider article and question the book's truthfulness, go to Monty Roberts' website and read his rebuttal. I am a brand-new owner of horses, and had almost NO idea what I was doing. Using only the information I got from Monty's book, I was able to saddle and ride my horse in one day. (Yes, I did have some riding experience.) It did take me more than 30 minutes. Not surprising since it took me 20 just to straighten out the bridle! Anyway, I wouldn't pay to much attention to what Horse & Rider had to say. Monty PROVES on his web-site that the article contains lies, misquotes, and garbled truth. C. Esposito
Rating: Summary: Heartfealt book about horses and life Review: This book was great!!!!!! I loved it!!!!! It not only talked about horses, but about life. It is a "must-read" for anyone. It was well organized, honest, happy, sad, and adventurous. It's my absolute favorite book
Rating: Summary: See February, 1999 issue of Horse & Rider magazine Review: ...makes me wonder what we CAN believe of his work
Rating: Summary: A very entertaining and inspiring life story Review: I don't raise horses but have always loved these animals. This book was a gift from a friend who knew I had read "The Horse Whisperer" and she thought this book might interest me. As I read this book, I became to admire this man for his courage and tenacity; he did it his way and it worked! If you raise horses, this is a great book - a gentle way to "break" your horses is discussed.
Rating: Summary: One of the best book ever written! Review: This is one of the best books I've ever read! If you haven't read it yet, read it! In some parts it is sad, some are happy. Because it is a real life story, it is even better. If you put it down, you won't think about anything else!
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: Despite his self-aggrandizement and accounts of extensive abuse in childhood, I read this book looking for the elements of information that might enrich my own horsemanship. My heart ached for him and for the horses he claimed were brutalized by his father. Admittedly, I found several of his claims as inventor of concepts to be preposterous, but ignored the ego-speak for what I believed would be the value of his experience. After reading recently published and disappointingly convincing accounts disputing numerous critical facts of Mr. Roberts life and experience with horses, I am contemplating returning my hard-copy of "The Man Who Listens to Horses" to the publisher. While I recognize that detractors can have reasons of their own to dispute his story, their accounts are sufficiently dispassionate and compelling that I find him to be no longer a credible source of information. Such a shame and so unnecessary. Will stick with listening to individuals whose integrity and skill have withstood the test of time (e.g., Tom Dorrance, Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman, etc.).
Rating: Summary: Easy to read, impossible to put down. Review: I recieved this book as a present, and I brought it everywhere, and could not stop reading it until I was done with it, left with a warm glow, and a craving for more. BUY IT NOW! DROP EVERYTHING, RUN OUT AND BUY THIS BOOK, AND DON'T DO ANYTHING ELSE UNTIL YOU'RE DONE! (Trust me, you won't be able to)
Rating: Summary: Understanding Horses Review: This is a biography and a training book wrapped in one. The biography tells how the method of training was achieved. Monty Roberts is an extra-ordinary person. His style of training is different that everyones, he explains what the horse shoudl be doing and why. I trained my gelding a couple years ago to the style of another trainer. But I didn't care for some of his techniques. I did the 'join-up' and my horse would follow me around right at my shoulder. I could walk though any of the corrals and he would be right behind. Monty Robert's form of training works, and your horse will be more loyal to you.
Rating: Summary: A Man On A Magnificent Journey Review: Not the fiction of Gulliver's Travels or Doctor Dolittle or the tales of St. Francis, in The Man Who Listens to Horses, we meet Monty Roberts a real person who talks with horses. Monty Roberts is a cowboy, athlete, horse trainer, ethologist, animal psychologist, and most of all a humanitarian. An exceptional story of a man's quest to really learn to communicate with the Equine species which cohabits our world. The book is about Monty Roberts, his life and his quest. Monty an accomplished and humble man is at ease with the Queen of England and California cowboys. But most of all he is at ease with horses, and gives us reasons to also desire to follow in his foot-steps. Those looking for a "how-to-book" will get much, much more from this book. Talking with, not to, horses is a way of living--not a few simple techniques. Monty, is truly, a great master whose life speaks volumes about setting aside cruelty and brutally towards men and animals. Monty Roberts the man, his life and mission, communicates the greater wisdom towards which we who love horses and love riding can aspire.
Rating: Summary: GREAT! Review: This book was the best. I showed me the real magic with horses. This book is inndescribable! And for all those people who where expecting a training book, the book is training. Life training, with horses and people. Monty Roberts has done what very few others can do. Young or old, into horses or not, everyone should read this book, for in it one finds the soul!
