Rating: Summary: More than just a man/animal experience. Review: After hearing about the book I went and purchased it. I could not put it down and completed it in a manner of hours. It is not a book of how-to, but more a book of how-come. Indeed it shows us all how to achieve true communication with any and all living things if we but just first search ourselves for what is being said to us. Truly a must read for educators all. What a wonderful world it would be if we would all communicate in Monty Roberts true style.
Rating: Summary: Self-indulgent reinvention of age-old training philosophies Review: I expected this book to be a horse training book. That may explain some of my bitter dissapointment as it was far from a hands-on, how-to training book. I found Roberts' claims grossly egotistical and the time he spent wallowing in his abusive childhood self-indulgent. By the time he took credit for "discovering" slant-load trailering, there was no getting me back. His methods, for the most part, are sound, just not new. Ever heard of Tom Dorrance? John Lyons? Pat Parelli? I'd suggest any one of these authors if you truly want help training your horse.
Rating: Summary: Good, but overhyped Review: Monty Roberts writes a good book, but he claims to have originated too much. Competent trainers have been quietly training horses for the last century. John Rarey, author of "The Rarey Method of Horse Training", was doing this sort of thing around the turn of the century. Patti Hughes, in California, does it today. Admittedly Roberts' techniques are in contrast to what Vicky Hearne ("Animal Happiness") once called "what passes for training on California racetracks", but they are not at all unique to him.
Rating: Summary: Even done the week-end course Review: Monty's big in Britain. Very big indeed. All his shows are sold out and one of the largest audiences, held in London's Docklands arena, numbered more than 3,000. One of his proteges in England, Kelly Marks, runs a Monty Roberts school near Oxford, running weekend and ten week courses. This is where you start to feel and understand Roberts' methods because they work. They really do and anyone can do it. (Admittedly, horses used on this course are already joined-up but that doesn't alter the fact that these animals respond to the same language in exactly the same way as would a wild filly).Someone sent Monty a video of his own horse-breaking methods, believing them to be similar to Monty's own. They were not even close and, actually, the video (which I've seen) only serves to remind what a barbaric, unecessary and evil practice that 'breaking' horses routinely is. If you have the chance, go and see Monty in action or, better still, take a course yourself. ! There's nothing quite like it.
Rating: Summary: It's amazing what Monty Roberts has accomplished in his life Review: He is THE true horse whisperer. An absolutely amazing story. I recommend this book to anyone, whether one is interested in horses or not. It's a great lesson not only in human-animal relationships but also human-human relationships as well.
Rating: Summary: The Best Horse Trainning Book Review: I gave this book five stars because it gave me a very good idea on horse training. I also saw him on TV on Animal Planet. I know whish even more know to have a horse to try his methods on. In the back of the book there is a section on how to do this yourself on your horse. What is cool about the story is that it is exiting and that makes it like fiction. I love to read fiction and this is one if the few books that is non-fiction that i have read and liked it. END
Rating: Summary: This book will change the way you think. Review: I have read this book, and I have also seen Monty in a semenar and was amazed at what took place. The book helped me with new ideas with two Mustangs that I had the pleasure to work with and after seeing the semenar I went home and tryed to join up with my 6yr old mare and since then she seems a little more cuddley. Everyone should at least try it, It will make you feel really great about being with your horse.
Rating: Summary: Don't saddle up without reading this book Review: This is a MUST READ book for anyone (Novice or Expert) who wants to work with horses. The art of communication is to make ones self understood. With Monty's help, you and your horse will speak fluently to each other!
Rating: Summary: Many lessons we all need to learn! Review: While I did enjoy reading this book, I was somewhat disappointed at the scarcity of real, in-depth information on Mr. Roberts' techniques. While catharsis is healing for the soul, the lengthly discourse on his troubles with his father were somewhat distracting. There were, however, many lessons in gentle teaching to be found in Mr. Roberts life, and as a teacher myself, I can relate to them all. As a horse person, I was especially intrigued by the stories of "joining up". Chronologically, the book makes several jumps within the past, and this leads to much confusion for the reader. Many times I found myself looking back to a former chapter or page to see what year I was reading in. I finished it in 2 days (a little under 8 hours), and that says something for it...I couldn't leave it alone for long.
Rating: Summary: A great book to read if you are a horse person or not Review: I am 17 and I loved this book. I couldn't put it down. Whether you are someone who rides horses are not you will love this book. It defonatly changes your way you think of horses and the way you try to train them. This is one of my favorite books and I will read it again and again. I now have a lot of respect for Monty Roberts.
