Rating: Summary: As though written by God! Review: When I started reading this book, I felt something strange come over me. Even though I have read many religious books in the past, never before have I felt this way before. Then it hit me; Rick Warren writes in such a passionate and spiritual way. It was as though it was written by God himself! This book is easily the best self help religious book available today. Thank you Rick. I truly believe that God guided your hand while you were writing this book. It is outstanding.
Rating: Summary: What's your purpose for writing a review? Review: As a working mother of four, my purpose in reading this book, was to allow myself some time to connect with God. I do read the bible, but doing that for me takes quiet time and that's something I don't have a lot of. I longed to have time with God and do everything else I needed to do also. After reading the first chapter, I realized that I don't have to have a regimented time that I focus on God. I can spend the day with Him! I need to take Him with me and ask His advice throughout my day, not to mention that I can praise Him continually for all the blessings that he has bestowed upon me. My four children all of whom drive me batty some of the time are the greatest gifts from Heaven. My job, though trying and frustrating and sometimes down right miserable, is a blessing from God too. There is a reason that God gave it to me and for that I am grateful. This book helped me realize that I needed to see that I have a purpose here to praise and worship God in EVERYTHING that I do, not just during my bible study time. I would like to address references in prior reviews concerning the simplicity of this book. I feel this book is for everyday people, people with hectic schedules who are stressed and looking for something that can be read without serious interpretation about what the writer is "trying to say". This book says to me that my work needs to be done with God, my joys and sorrows need to be done with God, that raising my kids needs to be done with God and for God, that everything I have, everything I am, is because of and for God. Most importantly, I feel that this book touches people who might not have known God otherwise. If you are a person who feels that this book is to simplistic for you, then you need to be reading something that is more challenging for you, but don't be condescending to those who genuinely enjoy the ease of reading that the book allows. As for the reviewers which state that this book does not teach what they believe the Bible says, and that the author is paraphrasing, I have this to say, there is only one Book that is entirely correct in EVERY aspect and phrase. God's Word cannot be recreated into another book. If you are looking truly for God's Word then you need to read the Bible because that's where you will find it. This book for me is a reminder that what is most important is God, not what church you go to, or what rituals you participate in. People have to connect to God on a personal level. God speaks to my heart, to me personally, and I rely on what God says, not on what man's perception of that is. This book may not be for everyone, but it was for me. Maybe it will be for you too. Perhaps you too will be blessed by this book, but if not, God will bless you through other circumstances which are completely your own.
Rating: Summary: Great for everyone!!! Review: I just read some negative reviews online about this book. I am participating in the 40 days Bible study and I think this book is terrific. My husband, who is not familiar with most Bible stories, is totally absorbed with this book. We discuss readings daily! I find myself reflecting on the lessons throughout the day. Bravo for writing a book that helps each one of us discover why we are here!
Rating: Summary: This is a travesty - its not the gospel Review: A Church of 15,000 people is an oxymoron. The writer speaks about an extremely self centered view of the gospel. Although he says in the beginning its not about you he goes on to tell how you will go to heaven how you will find all kinds of good stuff in the Church to make you feel good. Where is sacrafice or did Jesus not die a sacraficial death. It is sad that this has become a best seller but then that was its purpose to make money for its author.
Rating: Summary: Application! Review: This book is spiritually solid and written in a way that you can apply God's Word to your life in very practical ways. By the way, Rick and his wife only live on 10% of the sales of this book. The other 90% goes to charitable organizations. Doesn't sound like "money grabbing" to me.
Rating: Summary: Context...context...contex Review: Rick Warren has written a big winner. People connect with this book since he uses plain speaking language, links that language to numerous versions of the Bible, and then provides some of the religious language (worship, fellowship, etc.) you might hear in a Synagogue or Mosque but most importantly a Christian Church. Many of the reviews here are not about the book. They represent some interdenominational or ecumencial rivalry, or worse anti-Christian. It doesn't matter. The essense of genius is knowing what to ignore. Ignore the star ratings and the comments. The book is popular for one reason. It connects people with the Christian life in a positive way that strips away the thin veneer of religion and replaces it with the possibility of a direct relationship with God at least through prayer, and how God has a plan for your life. Don't let the cowards and self-appointed high priests get in the way. Talk with God. Buy and read the book.
Rating: Summary: Upon closer look, 5 stars, not 4....Needs more stars! Review: Initially I was only going to give this 4 stars. But after I read through the whole book at one sitting (couldn't put it down) I decided it was worth five stars. In fact, I think Amazon owes this book five stars, it should be 10 stars at least. The Purpose Driven Life will open your mind and your soul. It will help you find your purpose. And you will design your life as God intended you to. Outstanding book. Amazon, you owe us 5 stars!
Rating: Summary: What did happen to the five star reviews?? Review: There were a lot of five star reviews that were here a few weeks ago and are now gone. What happened to them Amazon? Are you guys playing favorites? What's the story Amazon? And how about the lower than industry average for The Purpose Driven Life? Why is this book rated so low here. Mingling with the ratings? Or is it that people would rather buy from their local bookstores than from Amazon? Perhaps that explains the lower than normal rating, sales have dropped off for Amazon. Can't say I blame anybody for buying from some other place. And if Amazon keeps playing games with reviews, I can see a whole lot more people not buying from Amazon.
Rating: Summary: UPON A CLOSER LOOK: only two stars, not four... Review: After looking over this book more closely and its watered-down message of "the popular gospel" and "the people-driven church," - I have downgraded my original rating from 4 stars to 2. I think, frankly, that Rick Warren and Robert Schuller are into the "success in ministry" thing clear up past their eyebrows. The Gospel was NEVER a popular route for the world or the worldly. Many preachers and cheerleaders seem to have forgotten that fact. What ever happened to old fashion REPENTANCE from sin, HOLINESS, and sanctification? - not very popular, huh? maybe with Man. but with GOD it has never gone out of style. Selah. Rating: Summary: The Best Review: I received this book with a note "The best gift you'll ever receive... ever!" and didn't quite believe it until I read it. It's by far the best book and I've never read a book that is more inspirational than this one. This one changed my life and focused it on what's important. Praise God for a messenger like Rick Warren and I hope his life will be blessed in every way.
