Rating: Summary: Pity the fools Review: I h ave seen several posts here referring to 1 star reviewers bashing this great book and also references to 5 star reviews being deleted for whatever reason. All I can say is pity those fools. Pity the fools who are so out of balance that they have to bash good books like this one as a way to release the pain they must have for their lack of success. Pity the fools who have to delete reviews because those reviews are a reminder to them of what empty lives they are living. What I got out of The Purpose Driven Life, or one of the things, was to create balance in my life. To let go of anger. To find peace and happiness. People who vent anger via 1 star reviews or by deleting 5 star reviews ate out of balance, they are very angry. They have no peace or happiness and they have no discipline. Just ignore them. Pray for them and hopefully, someday they will change. I'm sure that Rick Warren would agree. And the fact is, other readers had noticed both the 1 star slams of this book and the large number of 5 star reviews that have led to the lower ranking of thise book here at Amazon before anyone mentioned it. The true value of this book is the contents within. Not the number of 5 star reviews, ranking or malcontents attacking it. Hope this helps. I just finished reading another chapter of The Purpose Driven Life and one of my goals is to not feel ill toward anyone for any reason. Good advice for others, especially the five star reviewers who had their reviews deleted. QUESTION: Does having your review (s) deleted really matter that much? And does the opinions of the 1 star reviewer really matter at all? What do you do when a child does something wrong? We ignore it due tot he child's ignorance right? Well look at these 1 star reviewsers inthe same way you would look at a child. In fact, these people are emotionally just like children and haven't grown up yet. Just ignore them and realize that they really just don't know any better. And with that, I bid you all good evening.
Rating: Summary: A life changing book, if you are ready for it! Review: I would recomend this book to everyone! I am Catholic, so there are several things in the book that I don't agree with, theologically. But it has changed the way that I view my life, and how I should live my life. It discusses specific principles that every Christian should live by. I have learned that life is not about me, it is about helping God and others. Life is about love, and how to share it, even if others aren't. This book has taught me how important forgivness is, and how healing it can be! If you read this book in it's entirety, and apply it to your life, it will change your life forever. I plan on reading this book over and over again. I would recomend this book to anyone who wants God to be the leader of his/her life.
Rating: Summary: Needed now more than ever! Review: With attempts to take God out of the pledge of allegiance, stopping prayer in schools, ridiculous anti-Bush books that belong in the fiction, not non-fiction isle, certain politicians who say one thing but believe another, higher crime going on etc., etc. I cannot think of a better time for a quality book like The Purpose Driven Life than right now. Glad to see that The Purpose Driven Life is now #4 on the list of all best sellers in America and the World. It really should be #1, but we'll take #4. I also recommend Warren's other books, although this one is his best to date.
Rating: Summary: Still deleting 5* reviews???? Review: WOW! It looks like you guys haven't learned yet. For people new to this board, understand that 2-3 months ago, over 30 5 star reviews were deleted from this and other quality books. Meanwhile, 1 star reviews remained untouched. Hey, does that tell you something about what kind of people Amazon has working their controls? POINT? Don't pay attention to some of the reviews here, and don't judge this book by the Amazon rating for either 5 stars or book ranking. I find it interesting that The Purpose Driven Life is currently the #4 best selling book in the nation by reputable book polls but isn't even in the top 20 here at Amazon. Either something is wrong with Amazons system or people are just not buying from Amazon anymore and based on what I have seen over the last 3-4 months, can't say that I blame them. The Purpose Driven Life is a OUTSTANDING book. Ignore 1 star reviewers here and the unethical standards demonstrated. Highly recommended by and for Christian people. Devil worshipers, go somewhere else.
Rating: Summary: You Will Discover Review: This is necessary and easy read for Christians searching for their identity, for an answer to why they are here, for their journey down lifes road. When you read this book and think about what you are reading, you can't help but discover just why you are here and what your purpose is. It doesn't preach. It guides and leads you to the answers for the questions you have about your reason for being. God has a plan for you before you breathe your first breath. This book will help you discover this plan. There is not one answer that fits everyone. Each person will find their unique reason for being and becoming a better and more understanding Christian and human being. Again this book does not preach. It leads and guides you down the path to your answer of why. I recommend that you take your time when you read it and think about what you have read at the end of each chapter. This is NOT a self help book. It is a book about discovery and answers.
Rating: Summary: Curious phenomenon Review: I'm a Christian, conservative, and pro Bush, but I don't understand what that has to do with this book. I was reading some reviews and some folks were saying how great this book is compared to the glut of anti Bush books out there, or how this book represents conservatives. What does that have to do with anything? I read this book and was disappointed frankly. Pretty mundane writing and no good ideas. I like Rick Warren and think he's good guy, but I just can't in all honesty give a good review because it just wasn't a good book and I don't want to lie to make the star rating go up. That's pretty fair, not everyone has the same taste. I just don't get why everyone is getting so worked up about it and why there's all this competition. Aren't there more important things in life? God's not going to say Well done my good and faithful servant, for writing a good review on amazon. For crying out loud if you liked the book so much you'd know the purpose of your life is to do God's work and tell others about HIm. I don't think God is too thrilled about this senseless competition over star ratings
Rating: Summary: Missed Opportunity Review: What a disappointment. May I suggest the lessons Jesus taught in the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew: 5) as a guide for a life of purpose. Surely that is what Christian authors and leaders MUST teach (but aren't) in our culture of greed, individualism, militarism and nationalism. PDL ends up being another how-to book that the masses latch onto because of the marketing and hype. How sad.
Rating: Summary: This book has helped millions of people! Review: Without a doubt, The Purpose Driven Life has not only sold millions of copies, but it has also helped millions of people. I have heard stories that this book has gotten people back to God and back to Church. Some people even have given up unproductive wastes o f time like playing pc games or watching horror movies. Some people have seen the light and walked away from bad influences, devil worshipers etc. In some countries, it has even helped create peace! This is indeed a powerful book. Thank you Rick Warren.
Rating: Summary: This book sold millions of copies? Review: I hope the book profits are being used for inner city Christian ministries or overseas missions. The Purpose Driven Life is a run of the mill, typical sounding piece of Christian inspirational writing. I did not learn anything new or important, but I found the contents of the book well suited for nominal Christians. I suspect the reason for the book's success is the audience for which it is intended. It's a very loyal audience that hold tremendous buying power. And after viewing some reviews here, I am noticing a trend of Rick Warren fans bashing other reviewers. Very interesting. As a Christian I would hope we're above this kind of thing. If you don't agree, gently offer your opinion. If the comments are un-Biblical, offer the Biblical standpoint and share the Gospel. Bashing someone only puffs up one's own pride, and are we not called to be humble servants of Christ? My opinion is that the book offers nothing substantial, haphazardly quotes Scripture, and I was unimpressed by the content. Yes, I'm a conservative Protestant Christian who teaches Bible studies and does mission work, and I do not recommend this book. Yes, it's possible for a "real" Christian to not like it. Being a fan of this book is not a requirement for being a moral or "correct" kind of Christian. Those who think that only "true" Christians will love this book (and hence, those who don't are to be discredited as "fake") are living their own made-up Gospel and that is heresy.
Rating: Summary: Not great, not bad. Review: After reading some reviews here, I am SHOCKED to see supposed Christians trashing 1 star reviewers!! What kind of Christian attitude is this, calling people devil worshippers and such, simply because they don't like the same book? The Purpose Driven Life is NOT God's word. The Bible is the only inerrant word of God, so defend the Bible, not a devotional! Let me remind everyone that we are not all American middle-class suburbians. If you feel theatened by these 1 star reviews, I'd like to remind you that the typical modern day Christian is a Christian who lives in a 2nd or 3rd world country and makes very little money. Rick Warren's book is geared toward the niche of American affluent suburbs, and we are minority in this world! MOST Christians will NOT find this book helpful at all! MOST Christians can't even afford the book! Not to mention non-Christians. If you want to share the Gospel with nonbelievers, a good start is to engage them in conversation, not call them names! The Pharisees, who were only interested in promoting themselves and their own interests, received Jesus's harshest criticisms. Jesus clearly said that even pagans know how to love their own communities. Christians know how to love even enemies. The Purpose Driven Life is pretty much like any other devotionals I've read, and I must say that some others are far better. It claims NOT to be a self-help book, yet plainly in the first chapter Rick Warren writes: "By the end of this journey you will know God's purpose for your life...Having this perspective will reduce your stress, simplify your decisions, increase your satisfaction, and, most important, prepare your for eternity." Bold claims. Overall, the book does a decent job of explaining the whys and hows of being called into relationship with God. The book as a whole is mediocre.
