Rating: Summary: Purpose driven life for born agains Review: The title should properly read 'The Purpose Driven Life for Fundamentalist Christians' because that is who it is written for. Anyone hoping to discover some system for spiritual growth or understanding will be disappointed. The author's own understanding of God is of the 'Jesus wants you for a sunbeam' variety. Not very deep. And not for Hindus or any other religion. They presumably are going somewhere else.
Rating: Summary: A good place to start Review: I enjoyed this book as part of a Bible study at my church. The layout was easy to read; having the five key topics broken down into short daily readings made the material easy to digest. It gives the reader time to contemplate what Warren is saying and the implications for Christian life. The book helped me get clear on many issues; I felt closer to God when I read it. It was simple, and yes, even a bit simplistic. Still, it was a good starting point for discussions in our group that went much deeper. I highly recommend the videos that come with the book if you are going to use the text as part of a Bible study. I do see some of the contradictions, notably around the issue of free will vs. predestination, that some other readers have noted. I also disliked Warren's habit of using different bibles - I agree that this is problematic. However, I didn't find either of these issues problematic enough to take away from the basic message of the book. I don't see this book as an end point so much as a place to start in looking at questions about what life is about. Warren is just trying to get people thinking; he doesn't expect the book to be the be all and end all. He seems to understand that spiritual growth is a journey that evolves over time. Overall, The Purpose Driven Life is a positive, practical, user-friendly information on how to live a more Christian existence in my daily life. I think this is a good book to read if you are feeling disconnected from God want to live a more meaningful existence. It's got ideas in it that will be of benefit to both new and more experienced Christians.
Rating: Summary: Finally, substance Review: So many weight loss books are on the market, but so little books tell us how to rid the emotional baggage that weighs our life down. It's about time we got to the heart of what is important. This book, and The Little Guide To Happiness, are similiar in that regard. Great reading.
Rating: Summary: Breath of fresh air Review: I am two days away from finishing this book and I think it is one of the most inspirational and practical books on how to live a life pleasing to God that I have ever read. It's changed my perspective on the Great Commission and my role in helping to save souls; it has inspired me and shown me how to be a better Christian; it's simply a great book and a great guide - - one I will refer to often. I highly recommend this book to new Christians and seasoned Christians who want a deeper walk with God Almighty - with the I Am That I Am.
Rating: Summary: Beware Review: This book, while on the surface appears to be a source for biblical instruction and encouragement, is to be evaluated for what it fails to address....namely important precepts such as repentance. It is also weak on sin issues. I strongly recommend that you avoid using this book as a Bible study or as a source of biblical guidance.
Rating: Summary: Principles, faith and thinking right Review: This book captures the hearts of those who want to understand the MEANING god brings into our lives. I Love this book and have given it to my kids to read. I also strongly recommend Optimal Thinking: How to Be Your Best Self by Dr. Rosalene Glickman, a god-given classic which shows us how to accept what is in god's hands and make the most of what is in our own.
Rating: Summary: As an Evangelical, it is exciting to see this doing well Review: As an Evangelical, who knows the church scene in California well (especially John MacArthur's Grace Community Church in Sun Valley - not far from Saddleback), it is exciting to see an Evangelical author doing well on the Amazon.com lists - people who read Carolyn James's excellent book should especially enjoy what Rick Warren has to say. Christopher Catherwood, evangelical author (grandson of D. Martyn Lloyd-Jones) and author of CHRISTIANS MUSLIMS AND ISLAMIC RAGE (2003)
Rating: Summary: Great to see an Evangelical book doing so well Review: While I might have nuanced theological differences with some of the things that Rick Warren says in this book, it is great all the same to see an Evangelical Christians doing so well - and No.1 on the religious books list, as opposed to so much rubbish. If Christians authors such as Carolyn James like Rick Warren, then he is someone with whom to be reckoned. Christopher Catherwood, author of CHRISTIANS, MUSLIMS AND ISLAMIC RAGE and WHOSE SIDE IS GOD ON.
Rating: Summary: Get the journal as well! Review: This book is well designed, having space for me to add my own thoughts, beliefs and hopes. I learned from it. I highly recommend the journal that accompanies it.
