Summary: Design a life of purpose
Review: I rate this book as one of the best christian books available. Although I was aware of this book for quite some time, The Purpose Driven Life was given to me as a gift for Christmas. I read the whole book in a few days over the holiday vacation and have since started over taking a chapter a day and really absorbing the contents.

The Purpose Driven Life is truly a life changing book and a must read for anyone who wants the most out of life and live their lives according to the principles of God.

Summary: Outstanding book - a must read
Review: With so mnay horrible books on the market. So much calamity inthe world, never has there been a better time for a book like The Purpose Driven Life.

Christians will appreciate th is book. Some whose only purpose in life is to become a "Top 500" reviewer at Amazon will not find this book worthwhile and for good reason; their values are way out of sinc and are meaningless. So are their reviews.

5 stars all the way!

Summary: too rigid
Review: I was given this as a gift and thus started to read it. After about 30 pages I found myself flinching as I remembered my experiences in traditional "Christian" churches...wondering if there is then no hope for the eternal life for those of other beliefs. The thinking is too narrow for my needs and the book goes back to the store.

Summary: What is your purpose in life? Why are you here?
Review: This book helps to answer these questions. Fans of rah-rah feel good type books may not like this book. People who have forgotten about God, definitely will not like this book.

I bumped into a gentlmen the other day who gave me a great scientific explanation how this universe came to be and it wasn't because of God. I also found out that this guy is behind on his bills, has been going from job to job and driving a 20 year old beaten up piece of junk that cost him more to repair that what it's worth.

We were all put on this planet for a reason. Discovering that reason is what will take you from where you are now to where you want to be.

The Purpose-Driven Life by Rick Warren is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Summary: Very good book
Review: Our family really enjoys this book. We read a chapter every day and that includes our children. Sally and Paul listen as we read a chapter per day after our evening meal. It's like high protein for the soul.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to make the most out of life. The Purpose-Driven Life is an OUTSTANDING book and I highly recommend that you share it with your families.

Summary: I'm glad the book was helpful to many...
Review: I am sincerely glad that the book is helpful and eye opening to many people. It can indeed be a useful guide to Christian life. However, I did not find the book theologically grounded, and I felt that it relied too much on pop-Christian mechanisms (i.e. selling something appealing/entertaining/life-changing!/feel-good to the consumer). Warren's book is a popular guide, but that's all it is. God is gracious and has created us with a purpose, and if the book helps people figure out what that is, great. But you're not missing out on anything if you don't read it. The Bible does a perfectly fine job of revealing what that purpose is...

As for the reviewers who say that a "real" Christian wouldn't write a negative review, or that it's really about "ecumenical" disagreements: I'm pretty much as theologically conservative as it gets, and this book simply struck me as another pop-Christian money-maker. Speaking for myself as well, I think we Christians buy into this conservative Christian culture very easily. We're no different than teenagers who buy into Britney Spears or the latest teen movie. Only we buy into latest trends/opinions in Christian culture. After all: Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is-his good, pleasing and perfect will. (Romans 12:2)

Summary: the profit driven life
Review: The author Warren takes you through a day by day daily devotional realization that there is a God who has a purpose and plan for your life. It has some scripture albeit all new paraphrase type non-translations with questions to consider and points to ponder. It builds up to day 7 (where I got to before I could read it no further) when you are ready to "invite Jesus into your heart". Here is the magic prayer that he includes to "receive salvation" I think it says it all: "Jesus, I believe in you and I receive you." To that he adds: "If you sincerely meant that prayer, congratulations! Welcome to the family of God!" This is not the watered down gospel, it is a false gospel, which is no gospel at all! I am very glad that the staff at Grace is available to review such chaff so that I can spend my precious time reading more profitable stuff.

If you do not think this "Purpose Driven Life" thing is big, think again. I pastor a small rural church in the Sierra Foothills population 400 and our local three page paper is running ads for this event at a local church here in town. It is everywhere!

I never wanted to read this book as I was familiar with the background and writings of the writer but I did it as a favor for a friend so I could show him the error (which didn't take long to find I might add).

Avoid this one is my advice. A 40 days spiritual journey is what the author promises, 40 days of wandering is what you'll find. 40, wandering, ring a bell? This book is just more of the same "Seeker stuff" from one of it's guru's Rick Warren. I love James MacDonald's response to the seeker movement "The seeker movement, subtitled: How to Fill Your Church with Tares".

Hope this helps...

In Christ

Summary: I sometimes wonder ...
Review: I sometimes wonder if God sits in heaven and just shakes His head at the nonsense human beings throw at each other. There is no "right" way of worshipping God. What works for one person may not for another. That is the glory of God creating humans ... we are all different but we are all made in the image of Him.

I found this book to be very thought provoking. No where else have I learned more about living for our true future in everyday prose that I can easily digest. Yes, this book may not be deep enough for those who are intellectually inclined but for me, and obviously millions of others, it works in that it brings understanding as to what could bring us closer to God. And isn't that the goal of all Christians?

Why some people are harrumping at the path Rick Warren has paved for millions to follow is baffling. Aren't we all invited to be a part of God's table? Who's to say what the "right" way is to get to that table?

As for the naysayers in the book reviews, I do have a suggestion ... why not finish reading the book with an open heart before making such harsh judgements, keeping in mind that all men are invited to sit at God's table, not just those that get there in your approved ways.

Summary: Taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ
Review: As an honest critique, I found this book to be lacking and shallow. Warren quotes several hundred Bible verses (either in the neighborhood of 400 or 700, I forget) and provides little to NO exposition or exegesis.

Christians should honestly review the nature of what Warren is trying to do by offering this Jack van Impe style of rapid fire scripture quotation. Hopefully many readers will be inspired to use this only as a supplement for reading and studying to see if the scripture Warren uses are hermeneutically sound, but they probably won't, as I'm sure many of the quotations are used as blind support verses, as opposed to true exegetical argumentation.

All in all, I'm sure the Lord will use this book to bring hundreds if not thousands of believers and nonbelievers closer to himself. But it will happen in spite of this carelessly written book, not because of it.

Summary: Excellent Book
Review: If life has meaning and purpose, everything you do in a day, a week, a month, a year, a lifetime has deep and significant meaning. This book explores the purpose driven life. It is an excellent read. You must see yourself as an important element in God's universe and that is what I came away with reading this great book. I recommend it highly.
