Rating: Summary: Gully Jimson, he ain't Review: Every time I look at a Kinkade painting, I have the feeling that Gulley Jimson had in the Joyce Cary novel "The Horse's Mouth" when he looks at some dowager's efforts on canvas and grasps frantically for something positive to say, coming out with, "Yes this one's much more meaningful, because it not only has a little cottage, a mountain in the background, and a little spring, but it also has a deer sipping water, and a red pump out back." So now, the King of Motel Art presents his "philosophies" on spiritual searching, leading his audience to the light like the Pied Piper of Moths, Prometheus Unbound, a Kubla-Ross for the Brain-Dead. There's an audience to be found for New Age babble about what's important in life -- an audience that never read or could barely grasp any substantial thinking, an audience, in short, that wants to feel good. Reading this book elicits the same response that you might find in a shopping mall when a middle-aged woman strokes at a Kinkade lithograph and says, "Oh, it's lovely. Wouldn't it be nice to live there?" No thanks.
Rating: Summary: Lovely person, lovely book Review: GIST: A painter focuses on experiencing beauty in life. HAMMOCK-TIME: It's a leisurely read in hammock or beach chair. PACE: Slow. SUBSTANCE: Yes, I've heard, read, tried most of the suggestions Mr. Kinkade recommends. His great contribution is the very atmosphere of peace that seems to pervade him and his work, however the artistic standards may be debated by other artists. I began his book with some trepidation, not knowing if he was going to turn out to be some rigid religionist, yet his attitudes surprised and touched me. QUIBBLES: I'd love to see some more variety in the type of nature scenes he portrays. COMPLEMENTARY BOOKS: All of Mr. Kinkade's other works are interesting as well.
Rating: Summary: Splendid!!! Review: Here is a book that brings solid beauty into our lives like a breath of fresh air. Go and get this book and be refreshed.

Rating: Summary: My thoughts on the book and his work Review: Kinkade creates, pleasant, popular imagery, but as a professional artist, I have some misgivings about his work. So what do I have issue with? Firstly, I'm sure the book is pleasant and inspirational. Art is in the eye of the beholder, and I'm glad that people find inspiration in his books and paintings...that's a good thing. But, as a professional involved in the art and publishing business, I would like to caution anyone who is considering this artwork as a serious investment. I have several friends who are avid buyers of Kinkade art, and they are under the impression that these paintings will increase in value over time. Unfortunately, that will not be the case. Unless you purchased an original Kinkade oil painting, your Kinkade painting is a copy amongst thousands of others that are being printed on high-speed presses. The secret of success for Thomas Kinkade and the Media Arts Group (the controlling company) is that they print thousands of these 'paintings' at low cost, add a frame and a few flecks of hand-daubed paint, and charge the public hundreds to thousands of dollars! Each Kinkade print, as it leaves the press, no matter what they say, has cost only pennies to print. Add a frame and the total cost probably goes as high as $20. So, because of the quantity, and the actual cost to produce, a Kinkade 'painting' that costs $1000 will only be worth $20-50 in ten years from now. So please, before you spend the money, talk to an independent art appraiser who can tell you whether it's a wise financial decision. On another note, notice how chapters in the book are titled: Living in the Light of Simplicity;" "Saying Grace, Living in the Light of Thankfulness;" and "A Radiant Sunrise, Living in a Romantic Light." Isn't it nice how he ties his inspirational book into the paintings he sells?
Rating: Summary: Beautiful book! Review: Kinkade's artwork takes me back to a place where time stands still. This book is wonderful. His ideas for a more beautiful and fulfilling life seem very attainable. I recommend this book to everyone. I bought several copies to give away as gifts to those who are dear to me.
Rating: Summary: A breath of fresh air Review: Reading this book is like taking a walk in the country, feeling the sunshine and gentle breeze and hearing the singing of birds and the bubbling of a brook and smelling the fragrance of flowers and rain-washed earth. This is not a book one can read thoroughly in one sitting; instead it must be read in small portions so you can savor the richness of what the author/artist is conveying. And once you have turned the last page, don't be surprised if you go back to the beginning and start all over again. I have done so twice. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is seeking a more peaceful, joyful, and positive life.
