Rating: Summary: The Bible for Natural Haircare Review: If you are trying to decide what natural style to wear? Should you loc? How much maintenance natural haircare will be, or just plain confused about natural haircare, this is the book to have. Tulani's African-American Womens Guide To Natural Hair Care is a wonderful tool.In this book I learnt what is the best PH balance for our hair, why my hair might be dry or flaky. Tulani explains how you can make herbal and fruit conditioners from your own kitchen. Sisterlocks, Flat Twist, two-strand twist, palm roll twist, Comb Coiling, and just about every thing on braid extension and hair wrappings can be found in "No Lye". And those of you looking for the "Root of it all" that's chapter 1, understanding our hair and the composition of it. Tulani mentions in the book and I quote" Eventually your status as an "educated consumer" will have an impact upon the product manufacturer's research and development process. You will move aeway from products that are popular or familiar, toward products that you know will satisfy your hair's biochemical needs" I only have one more thing to say this is not a book to be without.
Rating: Summary: The book was absolutly wonderful. Review: It gave me alot of ideas on how to care for and style my newly natural mane. The book examines how chemicals are actually frying your hair. Is there any way for fried hair to be really healthy? I think not! This book, unlike many other black hair care books, gives you a scientific explaination to why some of our hair care habits are unhealthy. I have learned so much from this book. keep up the good work!!! I am truly happy being nappy.
Rating: Summary: As my Grams would say Kinard put her foot in this book!!! Review: Lovely book by Kinard! This book gives great pictures and Ideas of how to style you beautiful "nappy" hair! Her tips on hair care are priceless and can keep you from losing your hair with crazing suggestions the "unnaturals" will give you! Also if your vegetarian or vegan her practices will not go against your standards!
Rating: Summary: LIFE CHANGING BOOK Review: Mrs. Kinard presents an excellent medium for the history of African hair. Not only does she provide extensive background knowledge on the scientific aspect of black hair but she also provides styles, steps to maintaining your natural hair and encouragement for wearing a natural style. Thank you Mrs. Kinard for your inspiration and insight. This book helped me to decide to wear my hair natural, again. At 24 years old, I have only permed my hair 6 out of my 24 years of existence and now I even regret that!! After reading your book, I decided to wear braids in preparation for locking my beautiful African hair. THANKS AGAIN!!!
Rating: Summary: Just what we needed! Review: Ms Kinard knows what she's doing. She discourages the use of straighteners while understanding that the natural way is just not for some of us. But if you've even remotely considered locs, the section she's devoted to this glorious way of life will help you come to a decision. My hair has been natural for 7 years and with the help of this lovely book, I started my husband's locs last weekend (a highly sensual experience). Thank you, Tulani!
Rating: Summary: Miss Thing knows her stuff!!! Review: Ms. Tulani's book is very informative and she includes great pictures of all sorts of texture and styles. She can get long-winded when she gets into her historical backround, but if you want to get educated all the way around about natural hair, "No Lye" is the way to go!!!
Rating: Summary: Facing Reality About Natural Hair. Review: Ms.Kinard's book was very informative about hair care. I only gave this book three stars because it really didn't tell me how I can wear my hair naturally. Not everyone can wear braids and braids do begin to diminish your hairline. I must say that she gave excellent ideas on how to take care of your natural hair. I enjoyed the book, but I am a little disappointed because I still do not have a hairstyle for my natural hair which leaves me no choice but to turn to chemical straighteners.
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly uplifting Review: No Lye provides education and instruction that helps one become familiar with the natural hair texture. It also provides beautiful pictures of extensions, braids, cornrows, and especially locks. The photo of Amma's wonderful locks were shocking because I rarely saw natural hair so long. Other books I've seen/purchased were little more than "picture books" you'd see in a salon. It gave me new happiness about wearing my hair naturally even if I'm one of the few. If Tulani Kinard ever writes a book solely on hair locking, I'll be the first in line. Refreshing!!
Rating: Summary: The Best! Review: NO LYE! is probably my favorite book on the topic of natural haircare for Black women. Although I've owned it for several years, I still find myself pulling it off the bookshelf when I'm contemplating a new style. Tulani takes a decidedly "Afrocentric" approach to hair styling so you won't find any braid styles that "mimic" European hair (for example, there are no weaves or individual braids w/ human hair ends left free flowing). NO LYE! is full of useful information about the various "types" of African hair and how to best care for it in it's natural state. It also contains information on hair adornment, proper diet, caring for children's hair, alopecia and dryness/breakage. The book is full of beautiful black and white pictures of sisters (with and without extensions) sporting braids, naturals and locked styles. Since I'm considering locking my own hair, I found the info in the lock chapter to be inspiring and extremely helpful. NO LYE is a fantastic all-around reference book for natural hair but many of the styles would probably have to be done by a professional stylist if you aren't an expert braider yourself (I'm not). There is a brief segment on how to braid with extensions but it wasn't detailed enough for me to copy. Aside from twists and short naturals, there aren't many do-it-yourself styles for natural sisters in the book. In any case, I would recommend this book to anyone that has recently made the committment to natural hair.
Rating: Summary: one of the most informative books on Natural Black Hair Review: Thank you, Ms. Kinard. I am so tired of people asking me, "What are you going to do with your hair?" or "Are you ever going to perm it again?" I've worn my hair natural for 2 years now and I'm glad I do. This books gives many styling as well as grooming options for natural hair care and Ms. Kinard gives us the real scoop on whats really going on your head when you put a relaxer in it!
