Rating: Summary: The Best Part of Our Lives Review: "I still believe in my family. I still believe that human beings have the potential to look passed gender and see the love that two individuals hold for one another. And I still believe that the best part of life is when I am alone, wrapped in Sam's arms, trembling in rapture, bound by the affirmation of our teenage years."
This is how Tom cup ends his novel. I wish all of my friends could feel this in summing up their lives. Tom gives you a glimpse into the teenage years of two boys in the early 70's and you believe that it is a slice of reality. He doesn't spare his characters from bad experiences, what was real is presented and you get to see their reaction and how they overcome or succumb to it.
Most importantly Tom Cup writes smoothly a story that feels like it happened to you. He is gentle with love and strong with reality, but he draws you in to story that has happened to many kids. You see not only the love of the two main characters, but the love in their families; and the complexity of love which we generally forget.
I wish my children could have read this when they were in high school, it might have made some of their life easier. My wife read it is two days and wanted the ending to never end. She wanted more about the characters and what has happened to them. Maybe she didn't want a sequel but she was so enthralled by the story that she didn't want it to end. For me that has always been the hallmark of a great author.
