Summary: Deep and comical, all in one breath
Review: Bob Smith is one of Buffalo's better creations! He is funny as a performer and yet non-threatening. His latest book is delightfully funny in places and deep and reflective in others, especially as it deals with the breakup of his 10-year relationship. My partner and I saw Bob read from his book recently in Buffalo and he did a superb job! The mail order dildo entrepreneur story was hilarious! I must also add that Bob looks terrific since he's been working out in the gym so intensively lately! I wonder if he is trying to make Tom envious or what!

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: Don't even bother to read this, read the book instead!
Review: Excellent accounts of breaking up, dealing with family and rentering that dreaded dating scene. Although I was sad to see Tom and Bob didn't make it, it was nice to read that Bob has gone on with his life. Easy read and very entertaining. One more big hit for Bob! Way to go, Smith (I couldn't resist)

Summary: Middle of the Road
Review: I had high hopes for this book. It started off really well. The stories of Bob's break-up from Tom was actually interesting to read, and was a story I could follow and invest in. I was hoping for a happy ending at the end--perhaps taking this sad event and finding the humor and of course life lessons in it.

Halfway through the book, Bob resorts to childhood memories. It almost seemed as though he was writing two different books, one of memories and the other of his current life. I felt somewhat lost at times. The stories were entertaining, but didn't seem to make sense being plopped down in the middle of the rest of the current day situations. He ends the chapter with "Mom, I have a date." What a great line! It allows the reader to find out with who?? Is he moving on? Is he the man of his dreams? We never get to find out.

Instead, he moves quickly into his childhood, relating stories that are amusing in their own right but highly out of place. It almost makes me wish that the author would take a chance and finish that third book, finish the second book, and rerelease them.

He then skips back to current day with his misadventures of dates...which sort of leaves me wondering what was going on with the childhood chapters in the middle of the story. They didn't seem to go with the rest of the text.

It was enjoyable...but it left me wanting more.

Summary: Keep 'em coming, Bob...
Review: I love this book. Actually, I love all three of his books. This book is a must read for anyone who has recently broken up with a boyfriend and needs a chuckle and a little hope. I love everything Bob writes. I subscribe to 'Out' magazine just to see what he writes next. I'm ready for the next book. Keep 'em coming, Bob.

Summary: Funny book !
Review: I picked this book up at a booksale and really enjoyed it. Bob Smith is a very funny guy that talks about his failed relationship of 10 yrs, his relationship with his family and how he's beginning to date again and getting on with his life. I think his feelings on a relationship ending, on his mother, etc, are very universal and not limited to gay people. I think gay and straight alike can enjoy this very funny book. Find a copy and try not to crack a smile!

Summary: Straight Reader Likes It
Review: I was a classmate of Bob Smith's in our mutual hometown of Kenmore. I spoke with him for the first time since high school at our 25th class reunion this past weekend, which prompted me to read this book.

Bob, in fairness, was less a funny guy in school than he was that common breed of jackass that tries and fails to stand out through annoying behavior (the true standouts at Kenmore West were Lunsford the black guy, Paul the Dwarf & Dave the Guy Whose Legs Were Cut Off by the Train - everyone was reeeeeall nice to all of them, but deep down we were all afraid of catching what they had - who would have guessed that we had a gay guy too?). He has evidently, however, developed a genuine sense of humor in the intervening years.

Bob's homosexuality is by no means the sole focus of this autobiographical book, although it is prominently mentioned as a vital element of his life.

What is more interesting from the standpoint of the general reader is that Bob is blessed with two essentials that all first rate writers have - an almost supernaturally accurate memory and a deep humanity. He mentions a number of little details, such as the patriotic repainting of the Kenmore fire hydrants for the bicentennial, that I had long forgotten; the description (other than the name, which he changed for the book) of the coming of age of our schoolmate who went on to commit a murder is, while wrenching, treated in a most poignant fashion.

I truly wanted to give Bob 4 stars as a belated revenge for his flinging a humongous spit wad onto the back of my head in the seventh grade, but honesty demands 5.

Summary: Yes, He's Done It Again!
Review: Like his first book of hilarious essays, Openly Bob, this second collection is absolute perfection. I found myself rereading many of these paragraphs two or even three times. They were that elegant and clever. A gay humor writer myself, I bow and kiss the hem of Bob's garment. I'd kiss more, but we haven't been properly introduced.

Summary: Fantastic and (Too) Quick Read
Review: Way to Go, Smith! is a wonderful follow up to Openly Bob. Tender and humourous, it invites the reader to know intimate details of a relationship gone south without having the tell-all tone so common in most media today. Anyone who has had a fight over something as seemily innocuous as spaghetti tongs, read this book!

Summary: Great Book!
Review: What a great book! I've read all 3 books Bob has written (Growing Up Gay, Openly Bob & this one.) He's a terrific writer. As I read his books, I think I'm reading my own life's story. I can really relate to his experiences -- love, relationships, family & friends. I looked forward to this new book because it felt like I was catching up with an old friend. Several times I caught myself laughing out loud at something he had written.

I definitely connected with him when he wrote about cutting out pictures in the 4th grade -- his excellent eye/hand coordination as demonstrated by his superb cutting skills did not serve him well when he played baseball. How true!

I've heard Bob Smith perform a couple of times. He's as terrific in person as he is on paper. A truly funny, personable guy!

Way to Go, Smith, is a definite read - as are all of his books. I can't wait until the next one is printed!
