Rating: Summary: Poignant, hilarious, comforting... Review: _Growing Up Gay_ is about more than growing up gay. It's about growing up DIFFERENT, and not knowing why. It's a book about stereotypes, and conquering them. Many psychologists and well-meaning therapists have written articles and books about being homosexual, but few capture the wit and warmth of the Funny Gay Males. At every turn, I found myself shouting, "Yes! That's exactly what happened to me!" The true charm of _Growing Up Gay_ is that it is not only hilariously funny, it is also a subtle guidebook in compassion and empathy. After reading this book, not only was I comforted and amused, but I was educated as well. Perhaps the best thing about this book is its universality. I have shared _Growing Up Gay_ with several of my straight friends, and they all agreed its message reached farther than the title. This is a book about far more than being gay; it's a book about being unique and special and therefore worth more (if only in our own eyes). I would heartily recommend this book to anyone, gay or straight, who is ready for a few laughs and an inside look at what makes us tick.
