Rating: Summary: Adventurous first attempt Review: Alex Hutchinson earns my respect for daring to do what I thought most would not do. Despite the controversy of his discussion of gay relationships in sports amidst sensitive times, he also gets kudos for developing a great plot and love story between Ash, Jenn and Chad. The intensity of this bisexual love triangle is thrilling and keeps readers on edge with an undercurrent of disturbing discomfort and also an odd sense of familiarity that is even more troubling. His characterization is rich, colorful and realistic. Prepare to be nitty-grittied with this hard core novel. Its implications of life are too important to be dismissed.
Rating: Summary: *miraculous entertainment* Review: Great stuff Alex, This book is definately the best thing i've brought... It makes me laugh, makes me cry and it taught me a few things too... things I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
Im definately buying a copy of everythin u publish...cos if I dont im definately missing out.
so for all you people just browsing at this book... GO AHEAD AND BY IT.. cos its truly spectacular.
Rating: Summary: Interesting story line... Review: I enjoyed this book and really loved the interesting and uncommon plot and the characters. I thought the main character Ash was sincere and honest about who he was and how he lived his life, which is refreshing. What I didn't like about the book is it was HORRIBLY edited--that took away at least one star rating from me as I constantly got distracted by duplicate words, bad punctuation, missing words, and other very easily discernible editorial mistakes.
Rating: Summary: Unbelievablly Entertaining Review: I have never read a book that struck me so close to home as "Virgin Gloves" did. It definetly made me feel like there were others who have the same feelings as me. It was also nice to see the way that Alex Hutchinson was able to really express his characters. I was never really a fan of boxing but now that I know more about the sport I have started watching it with my husband who is now reading the book. I would definetly recommend this book to everyone, as it could fall under so many different types of literature. It is non-fiction/fiction, romance, sporty, educational, and eye-opening. "Virgin Gloves" has the ability to make the reader want to learn more about the basis of the book.
Rating: Summary: And when's the movie? Review: I loved it loved it loved it. Did I mention I loved it? My only question is when is the movie? Will it compare to "Play it to the Bone" and the Rocky movies, or even "the Hurricane". Of course not because this is the FIRST time someone has had the courage to write about a bi-sexual boxer. I don't want to give the whole story away, but it's more than just sexuality. It's about knowing what you want in life and going for it. For people who don't like to read, this book will introduce them to the wonderful world of reading as a form of entertainment as it is definetly an easy reading book. "Virgin Gloves" will be to the gay/lesbian community what the Harry Potter books are to the children community. EVERYBODY will love it!!! Go Hutchinson!
Rating: Summary: virgin gloves Review: To be honest with you, this is'nt a book I normally would've read, but I'm glad I did!!. Alex Hutchinson's unique writing style, and his knowledge of the "sweet science"(that's boxing for all you non-boxing readers) is incredible!!. What makes this book stick out from the rest is the "taboo" subject of a gay boxer and the boxing journalist who falls for him. This has been the best book that I have read in a real long time!!. I highly recommend this book to everyone!!.
Rating: Summary: guilty pleasures Review: Well let me explain my title of guilty pleasures i bought mr. hutchinson's book and went to reading it the same afternoon. I immediatly became inthrolled with the details of this never before written book. I stepped inside a world of forbidden treasures. I felt guilt and pleasure at the same moment, as if i were reading someones diary and any moment i would be caught. The book was very on the edge and was a wonderful add to my collection. I must continue to say that I have never read anything like it. It was genius. adding the art of boxing with sexualality made it a must read for boxing enthusiast and the gay and lesbian population. I am very glad to see the two mix and again look forward to reading more
Rating: Summary: Couldn't put the book down... Review: When I first sat down to read "Virgin Gloves" I had no idea what to expect. What I discovered was a story that drew me in deeper and deeper the further along I went. Each night I would pick up the book with intentions of reading just a little before bed but inevitably I would wind up staying awake much later than planned. With the close of each chapter, Hutchinson managed to leave me hanging just enough that I felt compelled to read "just a few more pages". I am not gay, nor am I a boxing fan, but that doesn't matter. "Virgin Gloves" is about more than those things. It is about the relationships we all experience in this one life we have to live. Bravo to Alex Hutchinson on his first novel! I look forward to future works from this new author.
Rating: Summary: And when's the movie? Review: When I read "Virgin Gloves" it was like stepping into another a world. Not many authors have been able to completely enthrall me. I started reading intending to do my customary one chapter per night. At 4:00 am I was still reading and although I knew I had to get up for work I couldn't put the book down. Hutchinson makes you fell like you know Ash Hatcher personally. I've suggested this book to everyone I know. "Virgin Gloves" gives insight into a different way of living and is sprinkled with facts about the amazing sport of boxing. I am anxiously awaiting the next tile by this gifted author.
Rating: Summary: enlightning Review: When I started to read this book I was a little tentative. I wasn't used to or ready for it's contents. And still by the time that I was well into the first chapter I was already hooked. This book has a whole new outlook one so many things that I had never thought I would come acrost in common literature. It makes you feel extreeemly connecter to the main charecter without painting him as an unatainable or unrealistic person. He is able to capture you trust and you find yourself rooting for him to suceed. Then in the very next paragraph you find yourself loathing him for the things that he does. That is why I love this book the charecters are all flawed. They are all "real" in a sence that you no longer see in todays books.I have never been all that interested in boxing but Alex has givin even the people who dislike or misunderstand the sport a reason to read with his backstory of the scandal and relationship with Chad. I found myself exited with the fights in the book and understanding who and what he was talking about. I even went so far as to watch a few matches at home with my husband. I no longer saw a bloodbath between two overly drugged men. Now i see two men who have worked extreemly hard to get to where they are and I admire them for it. Alex has made me a fan. This book has got a great and exiting arena for all types to enjoy. I definatly recomend this book to all who want to get away from the disasters of todays literature mediocrocies.
