Summary: I couldn't put it down....
Review: ...nor could I keep it down. This book has everything from drama, to sex, to religion, to sex, to mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat, to more sex. This book got me so steamed, I had to take a shower....more than once. I had read "Midnight in the Garden" by Darwin on a recent trip to Seattle, and when I saw this, I couldn't put it back on the shelf. If you are looking for a very entertaining and engrossing read, this is it! It kept me up many nights, 'cause I couldn't put it away.
*Darwin- I can't wait for your next novel...Bring it on!

Summary: A big book with big cojones. .
Review: After the events of 9-11, what's described in this circa 1999 thriller seem strangely clairvoyant. Like a Doberman's teeth ripping into flesh, it exposes the evil labyrinths of fanatical Christianity in America today. No other book does so with as spunky an overview of male/male eroticism. If you ever thought that sex, psychosis, right-wing religion, and violence aren't inextricably linked, think again, and read this book. Thumbs Up for this five-star blockbuster of a novel!

Summary: Could not put it down and it is a heavy book to read in bed
Review: Although I can understand the negative reviews generated by this novel, I still found it totally fascinating and could not put it down. If nothing else it is worth reading to discover Nancy Reagan's true talent. The sex scenes are gratuitous and the plot a bit far-fetched, but I still found the characters believable and sympathetic. It really is HIGH CAMP ("Dynasty" on steroids), and regardless of its faults, a wonderful and compelling read.

Summary: The Embodiment of Evil
Review: Far from being "the great gay epic" that some have claimed to this book to be, "Blood Moon" is nothing but badly written pornography; it is ,simultaneously, 804 pages of human beings who are driven by power, money, and sex. All the characters treat each other as either pure sexual receptacles or sources of money gotten through sexual prowess. There is a pervasive and underlying understanding that the measure of a man is defined solely by the enormous size of the his genitals (according to the author, this is what make "a real man") or the insatiable passion of a man or woman who wants to be penetrated by these utterly fantastic pieces of male anatomy. The lust for money, the overwhelming need for self-esteem at the expense of others, the hypocrisy and hate-mongering, the religious fanatacism, the psychosis and sexual obsession, and finally the ferocious, horrific and utterly insane blood bath at the end, are what comprise this book. The writing is pedantic and sophomoric, redundant and sensationalistic. I am appalled by the mind of Darwin Porter who, as author, can constuct a world of such visceral evil and self-destruction. There is not a single sympathetic character in the entire book. Every one of them is motivated by sexual obsession, self interest over anything else, and destruction of anyone or anything that gets in the way of that. As a very self-loving gay man, and as one who thrives on well-written gay literature (e.g. Paul Russell, Matthew Stadler, Michael Cunningham), I am ashamed to have "Blood Moon" claimed as "a great gay epic". This is not great literature. It is not even semi-good pornography. It is just a piece of sensationalism that will sell.

Summary: A pathetic attempt to produce the Great American Gay Novel
Review: For a novel of 804 pages to be enjoyable a couple of things would seem to be essential. The plot must be complex, the characters interesting, and if it is book with a lot of sex....the sex better be pretty good. Blood Moon fails on all counts.

The plot is simplistic, unbelievable, and in the end...down right annoying. What the author tries to pass off as intrigue comes across as stupidity. How much fun can a book be, when you spend half your time trying NOT to yell out the obvious solutions to the situations in which the characters find themselves.

The characters themselves all have a couple of things in common. They all seem to be having sex with each other....usually within a few paragraphs of one another. Half the gay men are openly gay, the other half are conflicted. The conflicted half have sex with the women. The characters are poorly developed (except sexually) and fit neatly into little pigeon holes. Crazed oversexed preacher, hypocritical politicians, evil manipulative handler, ex-football hero with big penis, ex-tennis star with big penis, gay guy stuck on guys with big penises....you get the idea.

All of this might be forgivable if the novel were intended as masturbation material. Such books usually come shrink wrapped to highten expectation. This book should be shrink wrapped to keep the silly sex scenes from leaking out. They are repetitive, poorly imagined, and reinforce a host of stereotypes. You know a book is in big trouble when you find yourself reading the sex scenes to your friends and you are all laughing out loud. That might even be fun if this were a short story....but at 804 pages it gets old.

Some books entertain, some books arouse, some teach and inspire. Blood Moon just leaves one with several questions:

Who the heck are the people who's reviews are quoted on the cover and on the first several pages? Do these people really exist? How come they are from all over the world? Wouldn't some of these people speak a language other than English? Is that why they liked it so much? Why is it that the covers of gay literature are likely to be the best part of the whole book? AND THE BIG QUESTION......why is this author so turned on by people shoving their tongues in each other's NOSES?

Summary: Am I nuts? .. Maybe, because I liked it (a little at least)

Summary: An embarassment to gay literature
Review: If unbelievable convoluted plots, boring repetetive dialogue, and predictable stereotypical characters are your passions, then rush right out to buy Blood Moon. Otherwise, I can suggest little reason for reading this book. The gang from Okeechobee are little more than a comical circus act, fronting for some of the most unimaginative pornography to hit the printed page. Just how many ways are there to "insert" a tongue in someone's mouth? Unfortunately, reading Blood Moon will answer this and many other questions that need never have been asked. The best thing I can say for this 804 page debacle is it makes a great doorstop.

Summary: Sexually intoxicating--a psychological & literary triumph
Review: Intrigued by the widely varied opinions on Darwin Porter's new psycho-sexual thriller, BLOOD MOON, I bought a copy. I loved it! It was one of the most entertaining and exciting high-libido novels I've ever read. The negative comments from some other readers (one of whom I suspect is Jerry Falwell in drag) are MORONIC and in one or two instances, incredibly naive.

This is a tour de force of gay fiction. To my knowledge, there's nothing remotely like it on the market today. The characters are both thought-provoking and sizzling, the dialogue is brilliant, and the plot is a page-turner. As for the sex scenes, they're credible, creative, and very, very hot.

Set in the late 70s, in the lusty days before AIDS, the novel weaves together about a half-dozen charismatic and full-bodied characters, most of whom are in their 20s, and most of whom are chock-full of testosterone. Their lives become entwined in a murky but enthralling blend of love, greed, psychosis, and betrayal. I read the book in three days, and didn't want it to end. What a hell of a movie it would make.

It was with satisfaction that I noted that much of the counterculture press from around the world has approved of this novel. Set in the fictional town of Okeechobee (perhaps a metaphor for Miami) the book appears in part to be autobiographical.

Gene and Buck are two of the sexiest men ever to appear in a gay novel. Rose Phillips, the charismatic and "deviant" evangelist, and her shocking son, Shelley, were surely written in hell. They are a brilliant--and jarring-- depiction of a fiercely ambitious mother/son team. I have a dozen other books piled up on my night stand, many of which I've tried (unsuccessfully) to finish reading. But what I'm really waiting for is Darwin Porter's next novel.

Blood Moon is WONDERFUL-- a spellbinder by which other contemporary gay novels should be judged!

Summary: A wild and wonderful romp!
Review: Stunning ... breathtaking ... mesmerizing. Brett Easton Ellis with better sex. My hot summer afternoons have been totally devoted to this hot, hot story, cleverly written, wittingly entertaining. I didn't actually count, but I think every character has sex with every other character. But this novel is more than just sex. It's a great story with fantastic dialogue. (The final conversation between Rose and Calder is a camp classic.) Darwin Porter is a name to remember. Highly, highly recommended.
