Rating: Summary: Good and interesting but not great Review: This story truly reads the way one would expect from the memoirs of a teenage boy, and it is also very interesting as a period piece (1968 and the events of that year). The story that builds up feels as if it terminates anti-climactically, but I can appreciate that because things often happen in such a way in real life. Because this novella is written in the form of a diary, there are events that happen to the supporting characters that seem to contribute little or nothing to the narrator's story. Just the same, I couldn't help but perceive this as a weakness in the storytelling owing to having learned in creative writing classes that if it doesn't make some kind of contribution to the main story, it should be deleted. I just finished reading the book, and I'm mentioning this point because there is a tragedy at the very end that doesn't involve the main story of this novel and seems totally unnecessary and depressing.
