Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Here's a book every Christian should read! Review: A lyrical book, rich with examples and images, this is small book with a powerful impact. It demonstrates how people with "good intentions" acting in the name of Christ can perpetrate what Unthank calls "spiritual rape."As a counselor, I know that gay people are often in deep turmoil; to be rejected when they turn to churches for support adds more pain. Unthank provides us with her own deep personal insights and shares the critical experiences which precipitated her own spiritual healing. Her words can speak to those of us who have caused pain to others in the name of Christianity as well as offer solace to those who have suffered such pain. I highly recommend this book to all!
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: I discovered this book more or less by accident Review: shortly after starting counseling with Kitty. I kind of felt like an intruder or voyeur, reading up on the "personal" life of my therapist! But it was great... it's not only served as a "common ground" and a sort of starting point for my conversations with Kitty, but the book continues to resonate with me in various areas of my life. I agree that the writing style is a bit... poetic?... in places, but I like it because it makes the book unique, personal, and sort of stream-of -consciousness... the way I tend to write and think... validating, I guess you could call it. Definitely deserves multiple reads... I await more written works from her and look forward to our meetings!

Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: Good message, but overly poetic Review: Throughout this book, the reader is faced with one important term: spiritual rape. Like Kitty Unthank, many of us readers have been spiritually raped ourselves, we were taught hatred in the guise of good. In the midst of our piety, if we told someone that they "couldn't be gay and Christian", we thought that we were doing the right thing, the noble thing, the Godly thing. Little did we know that years later, we would come to regret everything that we believed, and also, what we said to others along the way. In this apologetic novel, Unthank traces her steps through the Christian wilderness from hateful, vindictive fundamentalism to enlightment and liberalism. During her journey, she realizes that she must apologize to someone she hurt by her arrogance, someone who never deserved to be the target of hateful religious rhetoric. The message that Unthank sends is unlike any GLBT or Christian novel that I've read - the importance of apologizing to the people we've hurt or betrayed by our ignorance. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has ever had to reconcile their religion with sexual orientation, even the sexual orientation of others. One minor caveat that I must note, though, is that Unthank's writing is too poetic and symbolic for the message that she is trying to communicate. If you're in to heavy symbolism, you probably won't mind it, but if you were expecting a straightforward lesson, you'll probably be disappointed. For me, the lesson of the book often got lost in the language, which is why I can only give it 3 stars.
