Rating: Summary: hypnotic Review: This book grabbed hold of me and didn't let me go for 3 days (the amount of time it took for me to read it). Even after, i was thirsting for more of Bone's thoughts, her narrative so clear and painful, as only a childs could be. This book has won my affection. Beautiful and humid with honesty.
Rating: Summary: A deep and involving character study Review: This is the first book I have ever read that made me cry. I mean that in a good way, because although this is a devasating story, the excellent writing brings you into the lives of the characters in such detail that their experiences become your own. Great detail that allows you to easily picture all involved. A wonderful work of fiction.
Rating: Summary: You will get lost in this book! Review: This book was so rich and full, I read it with out putting it down, and when the unfortunate times came that I had to stop reading, I was thinking of the characters. I found this story even more fascinating to know that the events are based upon the author's life. A must read!
Rating: Summary: Very Addicting! Review: After reading this book I felt very moved by the author's choice of words and the story itself. It was an extremely eye opening story that I just couldn't put down! It was disturbing, but engaging! It really makes you think and totally impacts your emotions...TRULEY TOUCHING!
Rating: Summary: Disturbing, Gut-wrenching, and Powerful Review: This novel grabbed my attention from the moment I cracked the binding. Dorothy Allison is a master of dialogue, the reader feels as if they are a part of the story. Her characters are brilliantly deep and complicated. However, the story may be painful for some to read. It's a tragic emotional rollercoaster ride for the reader, with an ending that leaves you open mouthed and teary eyed. I recommend this book highly, it is one of the most disturbingly real, wonderfully written pieces of fiction I have read in a while.
Rating: Summary: A raw and powerful experience Review: A stellar example of pure and honest writing, this is a must-read. Dare to take a journey into the mind and soul of a 12-year old girl struggling to find a way to live in a world unimaginable to many and far too real for others.
Rating: Summary: Here we go again (inside joke) Review: I read Bastard Out Of Carolina only after seeing the movie onHBO. I have to say that not only is this an intense book, but themovie itself was rather true to the book & gave faces to the characters which made you feel the human suffering even more. After reading the novel & started to cry (which is a very hard thing for me to do). I just wanted to take Bone, pick her up & hold her & say "dont worry, everything will get better". I know that sounds corney, but being a mother, this book made me think of how it would be if my little girl had to go through the same type of pain & suffering that was brought on Bone. Dorthy Allison, I want to thank you for writing a book that brings a serious & tragic topic to life. I hope that we all come away from reading this novel learning how to engage in human decency, respect, & love of our children. END
Rating: Summary: a superb description of the mindset of an abused child... Review: In the book Basard out of Carolina, a young girl, Bone, tells the story of her loving mother and abusize stepfather. we read about the different experiences she goes through whether it be a birthday party or rape. her mother shows nothing but love for bone until she learns about the abuse that her husband is placing on the child. bone is betrayed by her mother, stepfather and others, and at times, all she has is her uncle earle who has some troubles with the law. this book can be easily related to the everyday thoughts of many children and adults in todays society.
Rating: Summary: Excellent! Review: I was recommended this book, and although my hectic life caused it to sit on my bookshelf for a long time it was more than worth the wait! It isn't an easy topic for me to read about, but Allison's writing kept me riveted, sharing Bone's experiences. I now have a greater understanding of friends who were once in Bone's position. I'd recommend it to anyone and everyone!
Rating: Summary: Fast read; Too fast Review: I read this novel for an education class and I had already seen the movie. The book read very quickly and i was filled with every emotion imaginable during the read. I don't think that it was realistic because of the simplicity of the anger and violence, and there wasn't a strong literary foundation to give the reader a sense of security, but it made you believe that it was written by a child.
