Rating: Summary: Fantastic characters and storyline Review: I really enjoyed this book. The characters all rang true to life, both in the way they were described and in their speech and actions. The story was so moving and I have to admit really heart-wrenching. This is the kind of book where you can visualize as you read - I'm afraid to see the movie for fear that it won't live up to my expectations!!
Rating: Summary: this tragic and inspiring novel pulls heavily at our heart Review: This tragic yet inspiring novel is one that is based on Allison's background. Once I picked up this book, I could not stop reading it. I would read until late into the night. This book was a required reading for my college English class, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. At the end of the book, tears came to my eyes; I felt I had know Bone all my life. She is a survivor, a heroine. At first, she feels that illegitimacy has defeated her, that her life is already what it's going to be. She is jealous of her younger sister, Reece, because she knew her father. Bone's emotional, painful struggle squeezes our hearts until it feels like a lump of grief. Bone finds that storytelling and fantasies are the only places where she can find solace and control. It is a place where she can escape her cruel stepfather's abuse. Her mother is slowly torn apart from her family by her husband,Glenn. He abuses Bone both sexually and emotionally. Bone feels that she deserves this abuse since she is illegitimate. I really liked the quote at the beginning of the book, from Baldwin: " People pay for what they have allowed themselves to become; and they pay for it simply, by the lives they lead." This is especially pertinent to Bone's story, becuase by the end of the book, Bone's anger has forced her to accept who she is and the life she has been handed. There is a hint of redemption in this quote, by the mention of the word "allowed." This suggest that people may be born into undesirable lives, but that they can be whoever they want to be. I wrote a paper on this book, and I found that I never wanted to stop writing; there was so much to say. Allison is a wonderful and inspiring novelist. Her stories hit close to home. This is definitely a book to be read several times.
Rating: Summary: Rushed thru it so I could start reading a GOOD book! Review: If I wanted to know about a life like Bone's, I could've watched COPS. The disfunction on every page was so predictable and classic white-trash.zzzz... It will, I'm sure, be on TV in no time -->something I would watch if nothing else was on. Don't waste your time and money!
Rating: Summary: Deeply, deeply moving Review: One of the best books I've ever read. I could not put this book down and was completely emotionally drained at its end. The characters are so wonderfully developed and Allison does a wonderful job of portraying each dimension of their personalities so that it's not just a black and white tragedy. It's not a book you read if you're looking to snap out of a depression so consider yourself forewarned. You won't be able to put it down. This is heavy duty
Rating: Summary: A Powerful Read Review: Allison's novel of survival is a stunning portrait of a young girl in the south struggling to make sense of the world that she lives in. Her desperation to fit in and find love is tenderly written despite the violence that the main character finds herself in the midst of. I found myself taking in Bone's own feelings and becoming as stubborn as she was as she faced trial after trial. The characters are so true-to-life because, unfortunately, many people like them litter today's talk shows. This novel shows us that despite being loved by relatives, nothing can compare to the love a parent. Even if you have seen the movie, read the book. You will get so much more out of it
Rating: Summary: GREAT. Review: I have a particular affection for this book because it gives dignity to Southern "poor white trash" and victims of abuse. Bone's story is not one asking for pity, which is especially important when considering the tremendous autobiographical reflections in this book. Allison's powerful writing can only be an indication of her own strength and dignity
Rating: Summary: How Desperate Can You Be? Review: Although fiction, the main subject of this book is played out daily in real life. The descriptions of landscape, people and emotions are excellent. You HAVE to hate Bone's step father. He a pathetic control freak and you find it almost impossible to believe how desperately her mother needs love and can keep going back to him. But she does, even when the most heinous act is thrown right in her face. This book shows that mother love is not the strongest love a woman can experience
Rating: Summary: Well-written, compelling story, and a fast read
Review: I finished this book quickly, but it was no worse
for that; Allison's prose is incredibly readable
without sacrificing depth. What's more, the story
is believable even if you've never experienced the
environment she portrays, and never met people
like the characters in this book. This book is
fairly short and definitely a fast read, but there's value in reading it more than once, and things you miss the first time around will be noticed the second time. Allison has taken rage and transmuted it into a powerfully moving tale. I'd recommend this book to anyone.
Rating: Summary: Stunning Review: On so many levels....this novel makes you stop and think. (The movie just came out on video...read the book first and then see the film. Both are too powerful for words
