Summary: A convivial and insightful guide towards self acceptance
Review: It's always been interesting to me that so many gay men of my generation (early 40's - years old, not birth years) by and large live with a lot of self loathing...Out, but not feeling really "in". Having come of age during the full bloom of sexual liberation, and having enjoyed its pleasures and accepted its consequences, it didn't surprise me to find out that Brad was a member of this club, regardless of his exceptional looks.

I though this book was terrific, written in a breezy, personal style and full of helpful suggestions and hints...it might seem a little embarrassing to sit down and write out some of these exercises, but once you get going, it's a surprisingly easy way to find honest and deeply rooted feelings that, when exposed, aren't so awful after all.

It takes a certain amount of bravery to reveal your psyche naked for the world to pick over...Bravo Brad for exposing your vulnerabilities in an effort to help others find peace within themselves.

Summary: Brad Gooch is cute
Review: It's important that all gay men buy this important book in order to gain an understanding of what it means to be a gay. Brad is an attractive spokesperson for the gay community and that is important.

Summary: Is it child-like or childish?
Review: Like many of the readers (and reviewers) I expected a lot more from this book. It's a strange book at best; Gooch seems to be tied up with his very own boyfriend: Brad Gooch, of course. The pages are filled with sweet indulgences about himself, and there is very little insight that you might expect from a man who is pushing 50-plus. I chose the title of the review carefully, since either Gooch is very naive and/or has dumbed down his book for us needy folk, or he is a 7 year old stuck in a middle age man's body. Sadly, I suspect the latter.

Summary: Is it child-like or childish?
Review: Mr. Gooch has written a book which is supposed to permit the reader to find one's "inner self", and to thereby learn to find fulfillment in one's own being. Unfortunately, the book does not address this objective, but rather addresses Mr. Gooch's self-indulgent search for himself, the meaning of his existence, and how he will find his ultimate soul mate. Needless to say, the book fails in its search, and the reader is left with a rather pathetic view of Mr. Gooch, his writing, and indeed, the haunting question, "Why did Brad Gooch write this book?" Save your money.

Summary: Finding A Sensible Self Help Book
Review: Only one nagging question after this read: Why has it taken so long for a gay man to write a book offering intelligent, sensible advice that doesn't scorn, judge, or drown one in psycho babble nonsense? Clearly Mr. Gooch possesses the experience, intelligence, thoughtfulness, and guts to tell it like it is for himself and for so many gay men and to then follow up with smart, witty, reasonable alternatives to the vicious cycle of self-eradicating behavior that so many us have fallen into. Sharp, funny, helpful...Gooch's honest take on contemporary gay life makes this a refreshing, pleasurable read that fuses a healthy dose of self reflection with humor. MORE PLEASE!

Summary: Non-book
Review: Readers interested in a self-help book for gay men might be better off looking at "How to Survive Your Own Gay Life." I can only repeat what others have said about the book's vacuousness, narcissism, and lack of depth. The author and his boyfriend within deserve each other.

Summary: Dr. Feelgood owns stock in Bic Pens
Review: Somewhere in this book is a basically sound idea.

But I can't read a single page without hearing the publisher and the author in this conversation: "Hey Brad, you know how all gay men are pining away for the lover they can't find, and how they never realize that what they're really looking for is within themselves? I think we could sell a lot of books here. You know, something like Dr. David Burns' Feeling Good. Let's put your picture on the cover (Good looks sell) and let's put in lots of those little paper and pen excercises that people love so much. It'll make them feel like they're really getting something. Look Brad, you can write (sort of) and you certainly enjoy talking about yourself. And don't worry if you can't think of much to say; we're going to use small pages, lots of white space, and large type. I think we can get away with selling 171 pages, don't you?"

"Get a few of your friends to do the excercises. It'll sound like you've really tested this stuff out. Oh, and by the way, Brad, stop talking to yourself in public."
