Nothing vulgar or obscene. The author did a wonderful job of portraying the genuine love these two women felt for eachother despite very different upbringings. A quick and enjoyable read.

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A wonderful and deeply moving lesbian love story Review: I first read this book about 20+ years ago. I loved it then, and I love it every bit as much now. It's a beautiful story of two women who fall in love in puritanical New England. Their love story is exquisite. (By the way, anyone who enjoyed P&S will also love Nanci Little's THE GRASS WIDOW. It's out of print now, but worth a search.)

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A warm, fuzzy, lovely book. Review: I picked up this book out of curiosity and because of the "sensational" subject, and was totally captivated by the personalities of the two heroines, the warmth and passion of their relationship, their quest for "a place for us," and the lyrical writing. The plot is a bit too good to be true, but who cares? It's a book to love.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Touching love story Review: I read this book back in college when a friend loaned it to me. It's a little simplistic, but what I liked best about it is that it's a love story set in an era (circa 1815) when the two lovers had to make their own way and define their relationship on their own, without the support of "gay culture". The author did a good job of conveying the "make their own way" bit; she could have done a better job at conveying a real sense of time and place. While the book was purported to take place in 1815 New York, it felt a little generic (as in "a long time ago in America"). Still, though, the book is good enough to be memorable, as it's been 15-odd years since I read it.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Warm and Humorous Review: Miller's writing ability is to be highly commended. She manages to combine warmth, love and humor into each page. Having read one too many "small blond" books, it's refreshing to find a lesbian love story in which the writing technique does not become irritating after the first chapter. Also, this book contains no elderly, non-judgemental housekeepers. The women have to figure things out all by themselves. Best line in the book: "I'm not playing you, Darling, I'm landing you."
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: The Courage to Love Review: Originally published in 1969 under the title _A Place for Us_, this work may have been a breakthrough in its time, but now its a giant step backward for lesbian fiction. The characters in this book, while touchingly in love, have not the realist punch necessary to keep this book going. MOre importantly, if we are to analyze this book from a socially aware perspective, it seems that the social interactions are poisoned by a ``butch-femme'' conflation of expression and orientation. There currently no shortage of far, far better novels out there, both lesbian and not.
