Summary: Washing Bataille's Mouth Out With Castile Soap...
Review: Ian Philips is one of the finest satyrs of satire writing today. Philips uses sexuality as the lens through which he focuses his hot pink verbal death rays on... you name it. In "What the Market Will Bear," which is on my shortlist of Best Short Stories Ever, the military-industrial complex takes a much-needed drubbing. The bleak and elegant brutality of this story is only matched by its pitch-perfect ending. "The Red Thread" made me wonder whether I would ever want to go to the dentist in San Francisco. "7 Just 7 Tales of Lust on a Bed" cheerfully rips SF's navel-gazing New Narrative apart and rearranges it in a verbal smiley-face pattern across a cheap duvet. The literary fangs stay out for "Shameless Self-Promotion." Pompous authors and politicans are advised to run and hide. It's possible to be satisfied, aroused, and horrified at the same time, but few writers have the talent to inspire such a complex reaction. The stories seem meant to get the reader hot and bothered above the neck instead of just below the waist, although if that happens too, so much the better. Calling this book erotica almost does it (and any readers expecting brainless, adjective-studded fodder for self-abuse) a disservice, as evidenced by reviews of his previous book, SEE DICK DECONSTRUCT. Philips is one of a select few authors in their 30s who have the talent and vision to transcend genre and actually contribute something new to contemporary literature. His career is one to watch. It's rare to say a writer deserves a career but if anyone does, it's Philips. Now if he'd just give us a novel...

Summary: Saturated Fun
Review: Satyriasis from Suspect Thoughts Press is a hilarious romp through the cornfields of the sexual imagination of Ian Philips. This book defies categorization-- classified as "literotica," Satyriasis not only has some dynamic characters, but the humor lightens what one might consider a heavy genre. "What the Market Will Bear" is worth the price of the collection alone. Introduced by the legendary Patrick Califia, Satyriasis also covers a lot of fabulous turbulence in the human drive to connect with others. The book cover also prominently displays what may be one of the most unforgettable blurbs ever published-- Michelle Tea writes, "Ian Philips is a very well-read, very blasphemous, dirty little piggy." I couldn't have said it better myself.

Summary: L'Enfant Terrible Strikes Again
Review: When the naughty muse known as Ian Philips first hit the queer literati scene with his stunning collection of literotica entitled SEE DICK DECONSTRUCT, everyone knew a brilliantly wicked, hilarious and singular talent had been birthed on the page, gloriously penned for all to read. With his second collection, Satyriasis, the legend continues. His turns of phrase, his pacing, his prodigious vocabularly, and his dirty mind all come together for a fundamentally unique and wonderfully entertaining experience. I laughed, I cried, and ended up wanting more, MUCH more. I am eagerly awaiting his third opus....

Summary: Smart, Tasty, and Raunchy
Review: Wow! I'd read some of Philips' stories in the past in different anthologies such as the Best Gay Erotica series so I knew what I might expect. I purchased Satyriasis first, and devoured it in days. Should have bought both of his books at the same time! I ran out and got his first, See Dick Deconstruct, the same day I finished Satyriasis. Both of these collections rock! He's a fantastic storyteller, weaving amazing characters, locations, themes, and a glorious array of sexual appetites, into something far more than powerful than any other erotic writer I've ever read. This is biting, smart satire, all wrapped up in tasty, raunchy fun. Get both collections!
