Rating: Summary: Three Stars for Part III Review: (Originally reviewed July 1999) This represents the 3rd of the Trilogy, which includes Invisible Life and Just as I Am. Our favorite good guy Raymond Tyler is sitting on top of the world. He's in a committed relationship with his fraternity brother Trent who we met in Just as I Am and is sharing a home with him in Seattle. As if things can't get any better, Ray has just been nominated for a federal judgeship. He expects a tough confirmation process but Lisa, his advocate during the process, assures him that he should have no problem being confirmed. Now if things seem to be too good to be true they are, this is a novel chock full of problems, drama and comedy. Curves are definitely ahead for Raymond and the other characters.Returning to the cast of characters are Raymond's family (Ray Sr., Marlee and Kirby), Nicole, Raymond's former girlfriend who is now his best friend Jared's wife, Peaches the mother of that crazy "chirl" Kyle who passed away from AIDS, and the guy all Harris' fans love to hate, Mr. John Basil Henderson as well as some new faces.
Rating: Summary: Cliff Hanger!!! Review: I admire the relationship between Raymond and his brother. I can't wait to see if Nicole gets revenge on Yancey. What was up with the lady in the audience clowning while Yancey was performing? Would have liked some drama with Basil and Dyanna on how she caught him with somebody else. Basil and Yancey...I can't wait to see how these two get alone. Would have like to have gotten more into Basil's business and to find out why his parents broke up and learned more about Basil's sister. Raymond seems to be just as naive as Nicole...giving up being a Judge for Trent. Okay, "Not A Day Goes By" I'm ready for you.
Rating: Summary: Nice reading about the old characters again Review: It was nice reading about the old characters again, but most of the story was predictable. Abide With Me has several good parts, but I think Harris' previous novel was much better.
Rating: Summary: Great story Review: I love how the characters have moved on since the first two books. I was upset with the changes that Nicole went through with Yancey. Nicole comes across as incredibly naive and trusting. Considering the business that she is in, and that Yancey was always in a place to replace her. But that's also the thing you like most about Nicole is her trusting nature. Ray just wound being more and more complexed but, he resolved a lot of issues in his life, but its so like everybody's life this constant state of flux. Cannot wait to see how Basil and Yancey wind up!
Rating: Summary: Not Satisfied Review: After reading Just As I Am and Invisible Life, Abide With Me was a let down. I finished the book very disappointed, wanting more from the characters. The first two books were filled with drama, suspense and complications. In this book, however, each chapter was almost predictable. I saw no significant changes or growth in Raymond or Nicole, and the drama in their lives was kept to a minimum. On the other hand, getting to know Basil a little more was a treat. Also discovering that Yancy may probably find out in the near future that what goes around really comes around, was very enlightening. I can't help but think that perhaps E. Lynn may have rushed this novel more than his others.
Rating: Summary: Another great one from E. Lynn Harris! Review: Ever since E Lynn Harris wrote Just As I Am he has kept readers wanting to know more about the characters Raymond Tyler, Nicole Springer and John "Basil" Henderson. He has done it again with Abide with Me. He concludes the saga with a bang! Raymond Tyler has received the promotion of a lifetime. The young lawyer will become a judge. Will that be possible despite his sexual preference? His world collides when Raymond -- despite having a meaningful relationship with Trent -- runs into his old lover Basil and his ex-girlfriend Nicole. We read a story of betrayal and a lot of drama. Despite the fact that the plot leans toward soap opera-ish, it is still a great treat from Mr. Harris. I highly recommend this entertaining novel.
Rating: Summary: The Same Ole' Same Review: The first book I read by E. Lynn Harris was "And This Too Shall Past." An excellent book. I give it five stars. Since that particular book was so different than any book I've ever read (especially the strong homosexual content), I decided to read another E. Lynn Harris book. This time, I got "Abide With Me." Hated it. It seemed like a repeat of "And This Too Shall Past." I am not against homosexuality, and I do know that Mr. Harris is a gay writer, but personally, I feel he gets to detailed with the gay love scenes, and I just haven't gotten use to reading such material. Unfortunately I don't think I'll be reading anymore books by Mr. Harris, but I do hear he's doing the screen play to one of my favorite movies, "Sparkle," so hopefully he wins me over with that.
