Rating: Summary: And This Too Was Superb!!! Review: E. Lynn Harris has done it again! I am a big fan of Mr. Harris' work. I have read "And This Too Shall Pass" (as well as "If This World Were Mine") in about 2 weeks total. He teaches many lessons. In "And This Too Shall Pass" we are confronted with a myriad of relationship and life issues to be dealt with such as religion, abandonment, homosexuality, rejection, rape, adoption, death, alcoholism love and trust. The beauty of this novel is how E. Lynn Harris demonstrates how self-love and acceptance comes from within. It takes a strong faith within God and yourself to discover this love and turn it to a divine happiness and to not fear it, but to welcome it with open-armed grace. I loved so many things about this novel especially how he vividly captured Chicago's Gold Coast - the better landmarks as well as the Cabrini-Green housing project. I am a Chicagoan and appreciated that very much instead of portraying Chicago as just an Al Capon mafiaso haven (or) all slummish and ghetto. I am very familiar with the radio personalities you mention (V-103 is my favorite radio station) as well Harold's Chicken! MamaCee (God bless her sweet, country soul) had me hollering with laughter (especially when she talked to complete strangers about her grandbaby Zurich or just about anything for that matter) and crying with pain about not being there in the in for Zach. I cried with Mia Miller in spite of her devlilish alcholic episodes. I am so glad Zurich was not accused of her rape I don't know what to do. I thought for second her ex-boyfriend Derrick did it and she just didn't remember it. The characters are real & all the food was delicious - especially Gina DeMarco's sausage and shrimp pasta. Gina DeMarco's character is a professional, caring person that most athletes should have represent them ("am I right, or am I wrong?") The novel brought everyone together and to terms with theirselves. It was laced with surprise and suspense as well beauty. I seen and felt every turn of the season and brilliant colors of the evening and morning skies. I thought I would just die if Zurich would have had sex with Basil Henderson - as fine as he wants to be - but a married D-O-G with Alpo on his breath nonetheless. I think it is a beautiful thing how Sean and Zurich discovered their love for one another and got together on Christmas. Mr. Harris, I am an aspiring writer and you are definitely one of my motivators! Thank you!! P.S. PLEASE CONSIDER MAKING "AND THISTO SHALL PASS" A MOVIE!
Rating: Summary: And This Too Shall Pass is a powerful piece of fiction Review: And This Too Shall Pass by E.Lynn Harris is a powerful and thoughtful look into the intracacies of African American love in the late nineties. Harris accomplishes this through four vivid and realistic characters who all experiece their share of joy and pain throughout the course of this moving story. Harris is particularly effective in the areas of figurative language and social commentary. Harris' great descriptive ability shines through in the potent and overwhelming sexuality in the novel. Readers should be advised that homosexuality is a major theme in this book and may be offensive. Overall, this is a rousing success for E.Lynn Harris.
Rating: Summary: I failed to see what the uproar was about. Good reading. Review: I like reading the book but I did not see the substance.. Althoug Harris is a very good story teller and writes with a great deal of feeling, I am inclined not to reccomend this book for young adults. Was it just me or did the stories in the book validate the confused state homesexual people are in?
Rating: Summary: Great,Great,Great!!!!!! Review: This is a book that kept my attention from begining to end. Mr. Harris really knows how to write about the experinces in life, gay or straight. I trully reccomend this book to anyone who loves a good read.
Rating: Summary: This book was awesome Review: I've read Invisible Life within 3 days , and could not wait to read the sequel. I am now reading Just As I Am. My man, You ARE AWESOM
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: I think Harris's decriptions of people, thing and situtions is without peer. One feels the room or sees the person. My whole office can hardly wait for the book to make the round. I look forward to many more chances to read this author
Rating: Summary: Nonsense wrapped in purple prose. Review: Not worth reading. But if you're looking for a homosexual Terry McMillan, this may be for you. Shallow, silly, and utterly forgettable, unless you're a male or female "girlfriend" who cannot get enough of this foolishness
Rating: Summary: This novel was no where near as well-written as the others. Review: I thought that the novel was extremely predictable. It was also a little too unrealistic that so many of the characters ended up being gay. I loved "Invisible Life" and "Just As I Am," and I look forward to his latest, but "And This Too Shall Pass" was a big disappointment
Rating: Summary: Excellent!! Review: E. Lynn Harris keeps you wanting to read more...Everytime I thought about putting the book down, he would grab me and keep me holding on. It was hard for me to put it down, I read this book first and once I finished I had to buy his other three. He is a remarkable author
Rating: Summary: Mr. Harris Strikes Gold for a Third Time Review: If anyone can put to paper the feelings (joy, anguish, sorry, confusion, etc.) felt by African-Americans in the gay community, Mr. Harris is the perfect choice. This book, as well as, the previous two can be viewed as both reference and guides for any African-American wishing to come to grips with who he/she is, both sexually and ethnically
