Summary: Great Summer Reading!
Review: "Psappha" is a great summer read. The characters were well developed, the story interesting and there's lots of historical tidbits that bring it to life. Now I see Sapho as the real person she was, not just an almost mythical historical figure. I want to see the movie version!

Review: Although faithful to what is known of the ancient poet, this book did not fully hold my attention. I preferred Erica Jong's imaginative and gripping story Sappho's Leap.

Review: Although not much is actually known about the Poetess, Ms Bell has written an interesting and believable "biography". Her fiction rings true to the point where I had to remind myself that this all came from the writer's imagination. There were a few, though very few, places where the story dragged, and I had a bit of trouble with some of the characters' names. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and am glad I bought it. I have suggested to several friends that they read it, but won't loan them my copy. They need to buy their own.

Summary: Wonderful First Novel...
Review: Beautifully written in the classical style, this historical novel of the young Sappho is a delight to read. Ms. Bell has been compared to the great Mary Renault, and this comparison is truly accurate. In Psappha, the reader sees, hears, feels the beauty of the Poetess of Lesbos, about whom so little is known. The reader can see the courtyard, see the students, hear the teaching, and sit in quiet awe at the feet of Sappho. A first effort by this author, one can certainly hope for more in the near future. A wonderful book, one to read again and again.

Summary: Mesmerizing!
Review: Beautifully written, rich in detail, and thoroughly researched, this book had me hooked from the first page. Ms. Bell, with her stunning mastery of words, breathes life into history and characters. I feel as if I know them personally. Psappha is a book I will read again and again, knowing that each time I'll find another nugget to treasure.

Review: Bell's research is right on! By basing the novel on the extant fragments from Sappho's own books, Peggy Ullman Bell has created a fine and exciting work that could have been penned by The Lesbian herself. Brava!

Summary: As close to a bio of Sappho as anybody's ever gonna get!
