Summary: the most incredible series ever written
Review: if you want a book so good you absolutely cannot put it down? go get this! the omnibus edition is a bit hard on the wrists but is well worth the pain. maupin creates characters that you fall in love with and find yourself no longer in your own world, but sucks you into barbary lane and the most loveable and intriguing people who ever lived. i don't believe maupin actually created these people, and theat they actually exist somewhere high up on russian hill. god bless armistead maupin and god bless you ms. madrigal! wherever you are!!

Summary: A tapestry of deliciousness.
Review: In the maelstrom of decadence and free-living of the 1960's, the residents of 28 Barbary Lane shelter themselves from the judgement and the suffocating ambitions of their peers and families. Armistead Maupin delights the reader of this San Fransisco chronicle with witty dialogue and sparse but cleverly placed narrative. His characters appear from the your neighbors backyard and make their way into your heart and home. In this collection of the three books in the series you will find, as I did, a treasured mate to take with you wherever you go and a novel you won't be able to put down. Read this book if you've ever wanted to know about sex, love and friendship. Like the quirky men and women of the book you too will find a haven in these tales from the city. You will love this book

Summary: 28 Barbary Lane ... Memory Lane.
Review: It's especially wonderful to have these three novels packaged as one. As three, they seem to fit together as a document of twenty-something culture before AIDS. While the 4-6, the second three of the series, are darker and more realistic, 1-3 are lighthearted with almost the flavor of a Dickens novel. Indeed, San Francisco is Maupin's London, and coincidence plays a large hand in his plots. Unfortunately, so do drugs and promiscous sex. But I suppose this serves as a reminder of times past, when life was freer, and a shot of penicillin could cure almost anything. Nevertheless, these stories brought back many memories and shared experiences. Michael, Mary-Ann, Brian, Mona and Mrs. Madrigal are three-dimentional, human characters. We can relate to them as people, even if we can't quite fathom their crazy, crazy ways.

Summary: 28 BARBARY LANE
Review: MUST READ------I first was given the book by a cousin, read it, loved it, and moved to San Francisco. I have met my Mrs. Madrigal, Mona, Michael Mouse, and felt like Mary Ann. Mr. Maupin has finished the series, after the sixth book...I have some stories of my own I'd love to see him print. READ IT. YOU WILL LOVE IT. I PROMISE. Just DONT MOVE TO S.F., APARTMENTS ARE HARD ENOUGH TO FIND...ESPECIALLY one's like 28 Barbary Lane.

Summary: Warning: Known to be Habit-Forming!
Review: Oh, oh, Oh ... OHHHHH! I couldn't stop. I couldn't put it down. Somebody HELP me! Make sure you clear your calendar before you start. I, for one, could not imagine having read this as a serialized novel -- the suspense truly WOULD kill me. Characters so compelling. Plots SO engaging (so what if they strain credulity; they were FUN. Besides, most of that whole era seems implausible now). Seldom have lives like these -- gay, straight, or whatever -- been told so well. After a non-stop romp through the final 4 novels, these characters are seared into my memory as if I'd had real flesh and blood encounters with them. To Michael "Mouse" and all past friends which are pieces of you, I love you forever! Someday, I swear, I'll have my own 28 Barbary Lane!

Summary: Thank you!
Review: Thank you Armistead! The Tales of the City series brought me more enjoyment than I can explain. Everyday, on my way to work, I expect to see Michael or Mona or best of all, Anna as I walk by the Filbert steps. This series truly brings to life the joy of San Francisco living. Thank you!

Summary: Too addicting!!!
Review: The entire collection of the Tales of the City Sreries is just too addiciting. I found myself saying "just one more chapter" even though is was 1:00 in the morning. The book(s) are cleverly written, and have several one liners that make you laugh out loud.. I whole-heartedly reccommend this book to anyone who loves a good soap opera with a "family" twist.
