Rating: Summary: dream boy, jim grimsley Review: ohmygod, this was a great book to read, it's not too slutty but has the right temper.a must get. i dont want to tell about anything in the book because its only about 200 pages which any detail will give away the cream of the plot. but only one question i do have for mr grimsley, they stand and go. they never look back. i must have said that a 100 times. i just hope there is another book to this that's all im saying. i'll buy it quick. alright readers don't delay, now is the time. and as always i leave you with this though, " may you have lots of love and life". teepee3232
Rating: Summary: Hauntingly beautiful and heart wrenching Review: I finished this book in one sitting and cried towards the end. I am confused about the ending but hope it is meant to be a happy one for both Nathan and Roy. I am an Asian Chinese woman and this book has provided me with a much better understanding of a gay relationship, which as potrayed in the book is warm and filled with tender love and not confined to pure sex.
Rating: Summary: An attempt at something literary Review: This book has high asperations, but unfortunately for Grimsley, his talent does not match his ambition. This is an easy, quick read, and it is little more than a gay romance/erotica story with a heavy-handed poetic flair. An ambitious failure by an author with a very disagreeable personality.
Rating: Summary: What a Fab book Review: I was engrosed all the way through this book i thought it was capturing a closeted life of two gay youths who enjoyed each others company. The scenes that envolved sex where left to the readers imagination which was excellant. It was sad and very graphic ending and certainly made me feel ill at the thought of Nathans death well written!!!
Rating: Summary: A beautifully written book with poor ending Review: I read this book within one day. The flow of writing was smooth and I enjoyed most of the book. The story line is predictable, almost to the point of resembling a compilation of many other gay teens books. Having said that, I feel so much for those two characters, Nathan and Roy, and they have deeply touched my heart. The ending was poorly written and somewhat disturbing partly because there is no closure to what had happened in the house, and partly because I feel the author has given up in writing this beautiful story 2/3 of the way and ended the story abruptly. It is so frustrating because I love the writing, the characters and if only the author had the perseverance to continue his amazing writing, this book could easily have become my Top 10 favourites. Jim Grimsley has the talents of a good writer, not many people out there could write something that relate to the readers, it's such a shame Jim didn't fully utilize his gift and I feel I got cheated by the author. I don't think I will buy any more of his books in the future.
Rating: Summary: Foreboding Review: Nathan and his parents move to a new small town, and there he befriends the boy next door, Roy, with whom he attends high school. Drawn to each other as havens from their respective troubles and families, Roy and Nathan begin a tentative love affair...With a dark and ominous atmosphere like that created by Scott Heim or Patrick Redmond, Grimsley's spellbinding tale will startle the reader with its honesty, intelligence, brutality, and beauty.
Rating: Summary: The Most Disturbing Yet Beautiful Novel I've Ever Read! Review: Dream Boy is a very uplifting tale of Nathen, a gay teenager with a dark past and Roy, Nathens next door neigbor, falling in love with each other. The boys take there relashionship slow at first knowing the danger if anyone finds out about there love for one another. As there love grows deeper, Roy invites Nathen on a camping trip with his two jocky frinds. But little dose Nathen know that Roys frinds are not very exepting of gays, and when Roys two friends find Nathen and Roy in a rather sexual position a devastating act of violence is brought onto Nathen. (Don't worry, has somewhat happy ending) Dream Boy is haunting yet beautiful and heart warming. Jim Grimsley is one of the best auothers ever! Because the ending was a little confusing I hope SO MUCH THAT GRIMSLEY WRITES A SEQUEAL thats not a disturbing a this. Read this gut-wrenching novel, just have tissues near by.
Rating: Summary: Heartbreaking Review: I too am not a fan of present-tense narratives and was chagrined to find it when I began reading this book, but honestly, after the first couple of paragraphs I was hooked and didn't even notice anymore. I fell in love with Roy and Nathan from the first page and was devastated at the tragic end. Shy, quiet Nathan, already the victim of sexual abuse from his alcoholic father, finds solace and love in the arms of the popular Roy, an older neighbor and schoolmate, but then suffers further injustice at the hands of another older boy. Roy, having finally found someone with whom to share his own desperate and lonely affection, then has his world virtually shattered by one of his own friends, whose combined bitter jealousy and alcohol abuse produce lethal consequences. This story, and particularly the heartwrenching climax, haunted and tormented me for days, and although the dream-sequence ending confused me, it was almost enough to relieve my broken heart. I loved this book, but I would have to say escapist fiction it is not. It does, however, provide a glimpse into the life of some emotionally scarred teenage boys and their desperate need for friendship, love and acceptance...and what happens when they find it.
Rating: Summary: Keep the tissues handy Review: Could this story have been any sadder?? I think I loved these characters right from page 1 and I was completely devastated at the tragic end. I didn't understand the ending though. Still, I have never cried so hard over a book in all my life.
Rating: Summary: One of the most beautiful novels of the century!!!! Review: Words cannot describe or explain just how incredible this book is! But I'll try. Do not be fooled or swayed by the rather fluffy title, or the simple description on it's jacket. This is pure poetry in the form of prose that delves so deep inside of you that the words will leave a mark causing you to ache days afterwards. Let's just say that the first few pages that I read enthralled me, so much so, that I couldn't put the book down and had the entire thing finished by the next day! I had racoon eyes as a result but my heart felt so full that it just didn't matter. This is definitely one of the most beautiful novels of the century: gay or straight, everyone should read Dream Boy.
