Rating: Summary: Xena fans will love this book.... Review: ...but for those of us who prefer our characters to be realistic, this book is a waste of time and money. It took me several weeks to struggle through this, when normally a book this size would have taken several days at the most. If this is the style Ms. Lake intends to write all her future books in, she's on my do-not-read list....
Rating: Summary: Absorbing and insightful: deeper than meets the eye Review: As she did with Ricochet in Time, author Lori L. Lake writes with authority--this time about police training and procedures, the day-to-day rigors of being a St. Paul police officer, and the myriad human conditions police officers must cope with in the line of duty. That is the backdrop of this most absorbing story of two police women. Desiree "Dez" Reilly is an eight year veteran on the force; Jaylynn Savage is a rookie, who has decided to go into law enforcement based upon a late-night encounter with would-be rapists. With this setting of place and circumstance firmly set in the opening pages of this novel, Ms. Lake begins a tale that will continue beyond this first volume. The book is populated with interesting and likeable characters who color the lives of the two female cops as they work out their complicated relationship. Will the stresses they face as cops be too much for their burgeoning friendship? Will Dez ever open her eyes to her emotionally traumatizing past that puts her at odds with her parents--and now her friends? This is a multilayered work, and just when you think you've got characters and situations figured out, the author throws you a curve. Be prepared for a nice ride, then look forward to Under the Gun, which will continue this story of these two fascinating women. ---Ronald L. Donaghe, author of The Blind Season.
Rating: Summary: Throw Away the Crutch! Review: Gun Shy is a long, detailed story of two women who finally make their way in the world with enough confidence to choose each other. It was funny and intense and the main characters were complicated and real. After reading Ricochet in Time and Gun Shy (which is the better written novel in my opinion) I can only say that Lake does not need the Xena crutch. She has no trouble creating characters that are little like a raven-haired warrior and her blonde sidekick. The resemblances are unnecessary and I urge the author to give them up completely. Away from the Xena world, and its sometimes purplish prose (raven-haired...gag me), I have no doubt that Lake could come up with equally wonderful characters. Of all the uber writers, Lake comes the closest to the lesbian romance writers I greatly admire. I would love to see what she can really do. Writing sincerely about the complex nature of love, passion and commitment is *NOT* easy, but I think Lake may be up to the job.
Rating: Summary: Introduction to two fascinating, complex characters Review: I bought this book by quite by accident. I had not read anything by Lori Lake. Many times I encountered her books, but for some reason did not buy them. A mistake that will be rectified shortly. Having friends in law enforcement, and having worked briefly in the field myself; she did her homework in making that aspect of the book very true to life. Thinking I could put the book down easily, I made the mistake of picking it up to read for a couple of hours during a doctor's visit. Big mistake! I found I could not put it down. Just like LJ Maas, this author has a way of not providing a good stopping point. I even took it to the dinner table, which is a first for me. What was most intriguing about the story was the relationship between the two main characters. Both characters are very complex, without being overly angst driven. She has a way of putting you inside the minds of both; without making it confusing. You always were clearly aware of who's point of view you were following. Like many of my favorite books, this is not a hot and heavy sexual story - it is a true romance story. Fortunately with a sequel (and possibly a third?) I plan to follow their story.

Rating: Summary: I was holding out hope! Review: I find Lake to be for the most part a good writer; I however didn't care for this book as much as i thought i might. The fractionation I guess was one of the things I didn't care for and I thought I felt a difference in her writing style also...not bad for as long a book that it is. but it was ok.
Rating: Summary: Great Characters and a Great Book Review: I loved this book. The characters are built upon so beautifully. Can't wait for the sequeal.
Rating: Summary: kept on my car seat in anticipation of traffic to read more Review: I met Lori Lake online and learned about her writing and books first hand. Although it took me a while to buy this book, I'm sorry I waited. It kept me so interested that I took it with me to work and always left it on my car seat, just in case I got stuck in traffic and had a moment to read a few more pages. This wonderful book has a great plot and characters that I would love to meet in person. Lori knows how to write a suspenseful novel and I look forward to finishing Ricochet in Time, which I just started and is now sitting on my car seat. Keep up the awesome work Lori!!!
Rating: Summary: Gun Shy Review: I read Gun Shy and found it to be a very exciting book. Lori keeps you very interested not only in the story but you will love the characters. It will keep you wanting more after you finish it. Lori is an excellent author . I am sure that you will not be disappointed in this book.
Rating: Summary: Gun Shy - A Must Read Review: I recommend Lori L. Lake to anyone who appreciates a quality storyteller. Lori has the ability to draw a reader into her fictitious world, allowing the reader to feel what the characters are feeling - good or bad. That to me is the sign of a good writer, and I believe that Lori wears the title of writer very well, as is evident with Gun Shy. What starts as a routine disturbance call, turns into a life-changing event for the veteran cop responding to the call and to one of the victims involved. So much so, that Jaylynn Savage wants to follow in the path to help others, as Officer Dez. Reilly did for her and her friend. Fate has thrown these two women together, now can they overcome their own obstacles to go from partners to partners in the truest sense of the word? This is not just another romance novel, but a trip into the lives of two big-city police officers and the events, challenges and fears they are faced with on and off duty. Gun Shy had me enthralled right from beginning to end, and when the end was reached, I felted I had had a glimpse into the lives of some very special people and a better understanding of what a police officer might encounter while putting their life on the line for us all. I am definitely looking forward to buying the sequel once it is released.
