Rating: Summary: Great Teen Read! Review: This helped me understand gayness from a new view.
Rating: Summary: a coming of age with my Ruby Friut Jungle Review: Rita Mae Brown captured my heart and soul. The words she uses captivated me and I never put the book down. In a day I read the whole thing and read it again the next day. Bravo to Rita Mae.

Rating: Summary: Simple style, Excellent concept Review: This book was recommended to me by a friend, and when I read the back I wasn't sure I was going to like it. However, once I picked it up, it was impossible to stop. I loved this book... the writing style was simple, though, and it tends to be predictable, but it conveys a message that we all must listen to: tolerance must be taught to our children. All homophobic people, and all str8 and gay people should read this book... it is educational in many ways and a wonderful read.
Rating: Summary: This is not bubble gum. Review: This book was written as if for children as all her books are. That is not to say that I do not enjoy them. I find that they hit true to home on most occasions. This book in particular I hold close to my heart for this was the book I was introduced to when I had some issues and was unsure of myself. However the book can be scary to some people as it delves into the extreme of some areas that the average person would never encounter. I think if the person reading the book is strong at heart and will, than she should enjoy it. If the reader is uncertain or worried than I feel she should approch the novel with caution as it can seem a little over the top.
Rating: Summary: 'Lesbian fiction' or just good fiction about a lesbian? Review: I am struck by how many of the reviewers felt they had to categorize this book as 'lesbian fiction.' OK, it is written by a lesbian and its central character is a lesbian and most of the book deals with issues related to sexual orientation. But all books have to be about something, and whether one is a lesbian or not, this book deals with the same human issues that confront everyone in growing up and makeing a place in the world. The very things that some of the reveiwers criticise - the humor and lightness of touch on some serious issues - is exactly what makes this book accessable to the reading public at large and really saves it from being simply 'lesbian fiction'. It is a truely entertaining and (for those who need it) informative book. Lesbians may, indeed, have a predisposition to like it because the themes are more immediate and personal, but all readers can relate.
Rating: Summary: A Frustrating Read Review: This could have been a five star rated read. Rita Mae Brown's book is funny, at times sensitive and is one lesbian readers can enjoy the world over regardless of the "Deep South" setting. There is, however, a frustration and annoyance which occasionally hits this reader over Rubyfruit Jungle. It's a brilliant book but sometimes too simplistic, and too light. It is never certain whether it wants to deal with important emotional issues etc. or to take a light-hearted view of all aspects of a lesbian coming out, meeting the world's pitfalls and challenges and emerging triumphant. It's a good read but could have been so much better; so much more.
Rating: Summary: Best summer read yet Review: There's hardly enough words to describe this book, and the feeling you get whilst reading it. Just one of those books that rejuvenates your soul after you've finished it. It's funny that others should mention the fact that they had to hide the book from others -- I, unfortunately, had to do that too.. But it was worth all the trouble!!A definite must for those who enjoyed J.D. Salinger's Catcher in the Rye
Rating: Summary: Definitely worth reading! Review: This book was very inspiring. I had to hide it from my parents of course, which made it all the more interesting. Unfortunately, I agree that the characters are underdeveloped and the writing style is simple, but as I have never been to Southern United States perhaps that is how they talk.
Rating: Summary: Very First book I actually finish! Review: What can I say this book was great! I have never finished a book in my entire life, and this book just kept me going. I never wanted to put it down which I didn't. I stayed up late night and wake up in the morning just to read the book. I read this when I was in high school (not school related material) which was 5 yrs ago. I was still in the closet with my family back then. I had to hide the book. I read the book about 5 times or so. Thanx Rita Brown for a great book!
