Summary: A VICTORIAN PAGE TURNER
Review: Set in Victorian England, FINGERSMITH tells the tale of the intertwined lives of Sue and Maud and their involvement in a scheme to get their hands on a large inheritance. To tell any more of the plot would possibly risk giving away some delicious tidbit. The reader should begin FINGERSMITH knowing as little as possible to enable them to fully appreciate all the twists and turns that are involved. Once one thinks they've figured it out they are once again left in the dark. Not until the last paragraph does one come upon the ending.

There is so much enjoyment to be found in FINGERSMITH. The writing is beautiful and enchanting. There were so many scenes where I could really 'feel' what it would be like to live during this time period. I most appreciated Waters' portrayal of the mad house before the advent of modern psychiatric knowledge and care. What a grim and desolate place to find yourself in. I have not enjoyed a work of historical fiction as much as FINGERSMITH since I read Margaret Atwood's ALIAS GRACE, which is equally impressive. FINGERSMITH is well worth reserving time during the day to indulge yourself.

Summary: Can't take your fingers of this one!
Review: Two words pretty much sum up Fingersmith by Sarah Waters: Absolutely Amazing! From the minute I picked this book up and began reading, I just could not put it down. It's quick, exciting pace makes it almost effortless to read and its frequent plot twists left me completely surprised and very eager to read on. Never have I read historical fiction that has been so enthralling. I loved Sarah Water's previous tour de forces, and she has done it once again. She is truly an amazing author, and I am very excited to see what magical tale she will spin for us next!

Summary: FingerSmith
Review: Fingersmith is Victorian street slang for pickpocket, and in this story, it's not just purses that are being purloined. The double entendre of the title is but a hint of the trickery that Waters has up her sleeve. Just when you think you know what's going on, and who can be trusted, the author deftly pulls the rug out from underneath you. And, like the characters in the book, you'll be scrambling to keep your wits. From the first sentence, you'll be immersed in a Victorian whirlpool that would make Dickens envious. This compelling page-turner is replete with pickpockets and thieves, anonymous pornographers, changelings, rat infested slums, sequestered country manors, madhouses, public hangings, daring escapes, deception, stolen identity and seduction.

This book is not really my type because I like scary books but It is a really good book

Summary: Captivating
Review: A dark novel in which one cannot know what to expect for one cannot foresee the dark intent of others. Repel as you like but be caught up in a world where no good truly exists and where there is madness at every turn. Cling to your sanity as best you could for the harsh realities of the world can truly drive one to madness.

A great read. Interesting turn of events. Wonderfully handled.

Summary: A Fascinating Novel
Review: As always with a Waters novel, you get excellent writing, well drawn characters, and an intrigueing story.

The only reason I did not give this novel 5 stars was because of my disappointment that there was not one truly good person amoung any of the main characters in the book.

Summary: Astounding!!

Summary: Amazing
Review: This really is a book that'll keep you up til you finish it. I sped through the last chapter and didn't get to bed until after 2 am. PLUS, as one blurb says happened to that reviewer, I did have a dream I was in a madhouse and that my roommate was the nurse in her bed. Freaked me out. It's a sign of how involving this book is.
One issue I had was reading that this was considered lesbian fiction. Why? It's a story of two people who fall in love and just happen to be girls. We don't call other stories "heterosexual fiction," right? This is simply good literature. No, it's *excellent* literature. Read this book, and fall in love with the girls yourself.
