Rating: Summary: The title was the only good thing about this book Review: TTV began with promise, but soon turned into a disappointment. The story quickly bogged down and wallowed in its own self pity along with Nancy. Love scenes were a bit heavy handed... The ending was too rushed and packaged too neatly. But by that time, I didn't care about these self-centered characters or what happened to them.
Rating: Summary: Tasteful erotica Review: I've never before read such well written, tasteful lesbian erotica as this. I was surprised to find such a great book set in 1890's England -- one that I couldn't put down until it was finished! The characters were incredibly believable, and the story is entrancing. Highly recommended.
Rating: Summary: more surprise, please! Review: there is no question that Sarah Waters is to be commended for telling such a wonderful tale set against the Victorian Age. her grasp on the history at the time is excellent. i liked the fact that she referenced several historical items and did so in a manner that kept the story fluid and lent it an authentic taste.part one was well-told, but suffered a bit from predictability. part two was, without a doubt, my favorite part of the book. there was a little too much foreshadowing that detracted somewhat from the story. in a story of (oftentimes) unrequited love, surprise and an unpredictable storyline is what makes an otherwise well-written novel absolutely superb. the ending was ok, but i would have preferred that there were more unknowns. all in all, Waters did an outstanding job on the technical but should have left more loose ends.
Rating: Summary: LAURA INGALLS SEES NELLIE OLSEN IN A DIFFERENT LIGHT Review: I FOUND IT TO BE A BIT MORE AKIN TO A "LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE" READ THAN I EXPECTED. I DID ENJOY IT ONCE I GOT INTO IT.
Rating: Summary: reads like a movie Review: The charm of this book is made evident through the great narrator and protagonist, Nancy King. For some reason, you find yourself completely understanding her world and what it would be like to be in the situations she gets herself into. This book is like a movie in its rhythm, and for that reason, I read it in a day. For a book with very fluid easy reading, I recommend this highly.
Rating: Summary: Couldn't wait for -- but dreaded -- the end!! Review: This is one of the few books in recent years that I've thought about during the day, when I was at work or doing chores, and couldn't wait to get to at night. It's very sensual, very true to life experience. A must-read for any grrl!
Rating: Summary: Whoa!!!!! Review: Based on the reviews I had read for "Affinity" I decided to check out Tipping the Velvet; I'm truly glad I did. It's a great read, clips along at a great pace. Definately worth taking a chance on!
Rating: Summary: A luscious adventure Review: Nancy King escapes from her small English hometown in Victorian England with her soon-to-be lover Kitty to London. The two become partners in business and love until Kitty betrays Nan for her career. From there, Nan becomes a rent boy, then a kept girl in lesbian high society, until she is thrown back into the streets. Meeting a woman from her past, Nan heals her heart and finds true love. Winner of a Lambda Literary Award, Waters's gorgeous story is equal parts historical novel and bawdy lesbian epic. My only regret is that I waited so long to read this book! I felt a bit distant at times from the characters, so I am hesitant to give it 5 of 5, but I'm quite on the border.
Rating: Summary: A tip of the hat to Tipping the Velvet Review: I bought this book almost a year ago when it first came out and then never had a chance to read it until recently. How I am sorry that I waited so long to do so. An incredible romp through the cities of England and the streets of London. Sarah Waters has a true gift for bringing characters to life. I found myself wanting to join Nancy on her journey. There are so many twists and turns that you are often left wondering "how is Waters going to get Nance out of this one?" And just as you think there is no hope and that our heroine will surely be lost forever, Waters pulls out all the stops and twists us around yet again into a loop that makes complete sense and leaves us wanting more. The moment I finished reading Tipping the Velvet, I wanted to start all over again.
Rating: Summary: I was sad to have this end! Review: I loved this book! The characters were beautifully developed and the settings were described in such detail that I felt I was actually in London in the 1890s. Sarah Waters is a very talented author and I can't wait to read her new novel, Affinity. This novel passed BOTH my tests of a great book: characters I truly cared about and a feeling of emptiness when I had to close the back cover. I wanted it to go on for another hundred pages! Do yourself a great favor, and read this book!
