Rating: Summary: lame Review: I am a gay man, and it can't get more boring to hear another gay whine about how hard it is to be gay in this society.
I've read many great autobiographies, by Piri Thomes, Nathan McCall, Esmeralda Santiago, Reinaldo Arenas to name a few.
This book was the Lamest biography I've ever read.
This whining drama queen made me wanna throw all his books away.
BUT, I think this is good for straight people to read.
Rating: Summary: Harris should stick to the creative side of writing Review: I am an avid E. Lynn Harris fan but I was not impressed by this biography. He leaves out too much detail. The only thing I really got out of it was that his step father Ben was a main source behind his homosexuality. Calling him all kinds of names such as sissy, I think that scarred him for life. That type of verbal abuse usually does. Although I don't encourage homosexuality, Harris' books do make me think and now I'm more understanding to people who are homosexual or bisexual. I've read all of Harris' books and this is the worse one. I think he should have put a little more personal info into it. Just because you're a great writer doesn't always mean you can do a biography. Some people are just better at creating things than they are with telling a true story.
Rating: Summary: ANOTHER MASTER PIECE Review: I cannot begin to thank you for writing our story. I am sure there are a lot of people who can in some way relate to this book. I have read all of you novels and I have enjoyed each of them. Keep the books coming.
Rating: Summary: Boring Review: I found myself bored with this book. I had an extremely hard time finishing. I expected better. I know it is his life story and all, but I think it could have been told a little better.
Rating: Summary: Four 1/2 stars (really) Review: I got to see Mr. E. Lynn Eye Candy in the flesh at a reading he did in Chicago and from his smile alone, I bought the book. He said he was concerned about people wanting to read about his life, but out of all his books (although many scenes are real life occurrences), I liked reading his memoir over all his other books. It was a bonafide look at his life from birth to now. I thoroughly enjoyed the dialogue and all his memories. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because he spoke about how women seem to be so clueless as to whose gay and whose not out of men who aren't stereotypically "flaming" but he gave no hints. I would've really liked to find out how he got his radar cause some of these sistas (like me) want to know to!
Rating: Summary: I Love This Autobiography Review: I have always loved autobiographies, from the autobiography of ex-slave Frederick Douglass to the life story of Colin Powell. These histories enable the reader to understand and sympathise with great black heroes, and to at once look at our lives and wonder how we can best emulate those whom we admire.E. Lynn Harris, as a writer and as a man who accepts himself, is worthy of emulation. As a writer, he vividly and honestly describes a little-known subculture, that of the black male bisexual. Harris captures and effectively portrays not only the black men themseves but also the women friends and lovers, wives, parents, children and fellow professionals with whom they interact. There are some revelations here, such as the intersection between "Thug Culture" and homosexuality. Some readers may be scandalized by these pages but none will be bored. They may instead find themselves awake in the early morning hours, devouring the last morsels of this well-seasoned chicken. Through Mr. Harris' experiences and his vignettes about his friends and acquaintances, we learn what is going on sexually in our communities. We learn what Mr. Harris has sought throughout all of the thinly-veiled autobiographical experiences described in his seven or eight previous novels: he's been seeking love, the love of another man, and according to his autobiography, he has 'learned to experience love'. He also, perhaps equally importantly, has learned to experience self-respect in a society that rejects and devalues him and people like him, and this is a message that all of us can learn from. I honestly hope that the 1.3 million Harris books sold will reach 2 million with the publication of this autobio, so that others can enjoy this gift of refreshing honesty and revelation as I have.
Rating: Summary: What Becomes of the Brokenhearted Review: I have been a fan of E. Lynn Harris ever since I read an excerpt of Just As I Am in Essence magazine. I had stopped reading to follow one of my other hobbies and didn't even know that a new book had been released until a friend told me about it. I raced to the bookstore and purchased my copy. I just finished reading this magnificent book. Applause, applause, and more applause. His memoir was written with the same grace and style as his others novels. I was drawn in from the very first chapter and remained riveted until the very last words. I found myself tearing up at moments and laughing aloud at others. This is a MUST READ!!!!!! I never doubted that I would enjoy this book, but I never realized that reading it would be therapuetic. I can't wait for the next novel.
Rating: Summary: Emotionally Captivating Heartwrenching and Triumphant Review: I have to admit that initally, I had no interest in reading non-fiction by E. Lynn even, though I love (auto)biographies. I wanted to read more about Zola, Raymond, Yancey B. and Basil. However, I'm glad I paid full price for this book. It almost read like a fiction novel. I loved the structure and couldn't wait to read it on my way to work and at Starbucks. For E. Lynn, this must have been most difficult material to write yet, allow the world to see. At times, I felt like I was reliving my own childhood, college years and adult life minus the alcohol. This was a phenomenal read and emotional read. On the subway, I had to put the book down in the beginning so that I wouldn't break down on a crowded train. Get this book!! Man...E. Lynn, if you are reading this...'nuff respect to you for your courage. I am certain that this will heal many of us with similar experiences and even those who do not.
Rating: Summary: Harris's reality is more intriguing than his fiction! Review: I intend to offer no "spoilers" here because the book deserves to be read and digested by every fan of the best-selling author. Considering what the man went through, it's amazing that he became a writer loved by millions. Heck, it's amazing that he lived past his twenty-fifth birthday! Harris takes the reader on a personal journey of tragedy, recovery, and acceptance. I can't think of a better way to really get to know the man that has "spoken" for so many others in his brilliant novels. This, to be truthful, is my first Harris book. I most definitely will be catching up by grabbing the others that I have missed. To anyone that yearns for a little more "titillation" in the details of Mr. Harris's sexual encounters, I suggest that one reads a Jackie Collins' work. Harris comes across as classy and not trashy. That, obviously, accounts for his immense popularity.
Rating: Summary: A MUST READ Review: I just finished reading this book. Mr. Harris has really outdone himself this time. This book made you laugh, cry. It is a must read. Bravo
