Rating: Summary: The fourth in a great series of books. Invest some time! Review: Much like the other three books in this series, The Who: The Definitive Guitar Collection 4 (containing transcriptions of no less than 39 songs) is a wonderful addition to any guitarist's library.
The not so good:
» Firstly, it is useful to point out that I did notice a few errors in the lyrical transcriptions, such as the line in Success Story which, instead of reading "you shall play Carnegie Hall", reads "you shall play a comedian" (?!).
» Also, the book binding method is not really suitable for guitarists. It is difficult to keep the book open (even with a music stand). Unless well treated, the spine of the book will probably end up losing some pages.
The good:
Let me identify some of the things that make this book worthy of being on your bookshelf:
» Fantastic value for money. Here in Australia, music books are overpriced. It is very rare to find a 224 page book, containing as much information (incidental as well as topical) as this book does.
» A well presented chronological history of the band. A more than decent overview, underlining the influence that this group has had on popular (and not so popular) music for the last four decades.
» A number of great black and white photos, evoking and capturing some af the facets of the band.
» Considering the number of books out there that don't even transcribe a song in the correct key, a book that comes very close to recording the rhythmic intricacies, beautiful chord voicings, and talented techniques of Pete Townshend's guitar playing, is a valuable find.
Not perfect, but indeed an excellent undertaking from Hal Leonard Publishing. Well Done.
