Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: A Solid Introduction Review: Solid. This is a carefully organized a well edited text. Additionally, it includes two distinct and substantial anthologies: one that covers well known poets from Sappho to Anne Sexton. There is also a selection of poems by twenty-four contemporary poets. I found the first ("Reading Poems") and the fifth chapters ("Writing about Poetry") to be particularly helpful for students. The last two chapters, on critical approaches and writing with sources, respectively, are excellent and more than sufficient for an introductory course. The chapter on poets in context (a detailed look at reading Dickinson, Frost and Langston Hughes) is nicely conceived. In short, there is a little of everything here, including some great examples of ekphrasis, and it is presented clearly and intelligently.
