Summary: The first major study of two significant female dancers
Review: Dance professor Ananya Chatterjea presents Butting Out: Reading Resistive Choreographies Through Works by Jawole Willa Jo Zollar and Chandralekha, the first major study of two significant contemporary female dancers and choreographers of the 20th century. Jawole Willa Jo Zollar is the Artistic Director for the world-renowned company The Urban Bush Women, based in New York City, and Chandralekha an East Indian choreographer based in Madras and is especially known for blending postmodern and traditional forms of dance. Both women's contributions to global culture are closely scrutinized with regard to choreographic, aesthetic, and women's studies perspectives. Sparse black-and-white photographs illustrate this scholarly and welcome addition to dance studies shelves.
