Rating: ![3 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-3-0.gif) Summary: attractive title, overrated book Review: I have 400 chess books, and picked up a copy of this used after reading about certain experts raving about it. Well, any unique qualities this book has were not so apparent to me. The deal with this book is as follows: it may have been the first book to present the new theory that chess is not a game of rules, but of dynamic appraisal of concrete positions. This theory was fleshed out in great detail in the dissertation-like effort by Watson, Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy. However, the Watson book towers so high above this little ditty by Suba as to render this work completely unnecessary to the chess reader. This explains why certain authors revere this book--because of its importance in starting a trend in chess literature--but why the public pretty much dismissed it with a yawn. It is as if The Blockade were Nimzowitsch's only work, but someone else wrote My System. In this case, Watson wrote the "My System." Another analogy would be in recorded music, where someone might be considered very important to historians because he was the first to do something, but the public couldn't care less because someone else did it ten times better soon thereafter. I am not saying the book is worthless; I am just saying that it is a nice little games collection that doesn't really warrant the hype it receives.
Rating: ![4 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-4-0.gif) Summary: Great mix of annotated games and frank discussion of chess Review: This book is fun and valuable. Read Suba's articles, play through his games. You will learn and be entertained. Read this first, then go to John Watson's Secrets of Modern Chess Strategy. It will help you enjoy chess more, and play a bit better!
