Summary: A very good middlegame book.
Review: I wish I found out about this chess book a long time ago! Both books (The middlegame part I and II) are excellent.
It covers everything you need to know about the middlegame:
Bishop vs Knight, Compensation for material loss, Piece equivalents, Pawn structures and mobility, how to attack,
how to defend, attacking the king, how to get the inititave, open and half-open files, liquidation, and the minority attack. Having studied the pawn structures, I now understand how the major openings work, and I can find logical moves in the openings.(Instead of having to go through insane analysis columns in opening books). The endings, because of a knowledge of pawn structures, have become more clear to me. I know what to look for in positions now, and how to plan. But it takes alot of work to go through these books. I have never studied so many examples in my life! But going through the games has forced me to think about tactics and strategy. My tournament games have improved too. These books are worth the time and money! Get them!

Summary: Why did I wait so long?
Review: I write this review simply to tell the player who has considered getting this two-volume set, but who has not, thinking that he has enough books on the middlegame, that he MUST GET IT RIGHT NOW!! I did not buy it for years, because I have so many books on the middlegame, and because I couldn't find it cheap. I finally bought them both, and am stunned by how great the books are. First, I love the layout of Hays books. This has the same fonts and layout as Tarrasch's 300 Games. The examples just keep coming, one after the other, each very helpful and instructive. I am stunned by how good these books are! Tons of complete games as well! Buy thenm both from Amazon and get free shipping.

Summary: A tremendous instructional book!
Review: The last guy to review this book down below apparently meant to give it 5 stars, but instead gave it zero. Oops!

This book, along with Book 2 on Dynamic Features, was a very big reason why I made it up to a USCF Expert rating.

Buy these two books. Study them. Watch your rating climb!
