Summary: A fantastic fantasy -- or is it??
Review: Over the years I stumbled across the fact that Alvin Schwartz wrote Superman during the strip's best time. But upon reading An Unlikely Prophet I was mystified by his translation of the Superman myth to a (almost?) real life situation. Schwartz is a master at dangling the real and the imaginary before us. Did all this really happen or is it a fiendishly clever work of fiction? Where did the lines cross? If, indeed, they crossed at all. Unlikely Prophet is the quintessential 'can't-put-down' book. It is a highly entertaining and, if you choose to believe the Tibetan mysticism, a very educational read. It will improve your geography, sociology, psychology and vocabulary. And it should raise Alvin Schwartz higher in the ranks of superior writers.

Summary: Describes what led to writing book and its effect
Review: Something happened to me. It was sudden, unexpected, unexplainable. I was working on my fourth novel. I had also spent 18 years in the forties and fifties writing comics and still enjoyed some celebrity as the Golden Age author of both the Superman and Batman newspaper strips and many other comics. Some reviewers of my books pointed out that like Superman and Clark Kent, or Batman and Bruce Wayne, I too, led a double life. I was even asked how I had kept my life as a comics writer separated from my life as a literary novelist and critic. Then something happened that finally did bring the two lives into perspective. It began as an encounter with someone whose very existence I would previously have regarded with total scepticism. This amazing meeting, this singularity, if you like, broke down everything I had ever believed about what was real or possible.. It lit up my past with a new realization of the astonishing prodigies I had already experienced and then chosen to ignore. And I became aware that almost everyone else lived in the same state of trained inattention. An Unlikely Prophet is the story of that experience. Start reading it and you'll very likely find that you too will be racing along a pathway you can't really get off any more. Because the whole experience simply communicates itself that way, detailing the gradual reawakening of my dulled vision to the unimaginable brightness of our world- the sheer marvel of it-and the grace that lies behind each day of our lives..

Review: The book starts out grounded in reality, and then slowly becomes less grounded until it starts to fly. An enjoyable story and a fascinating belief structure fill the pages. Try it.
