Rating: Summary: LACKING ONE VERY IMPORTANT THING! Review: I BOUGHT IT CAUSE IM A SUPER AMERICAN BEAUTY FAN AND SAW THE LITTLE PICTURE ON THE SIDE OF THE COVER, THEN I SAW IT LISTED IN THE OSCAR WINNERS, BUT GUESS WHAT? NO REVIEW ABOUT IT!
Rating: Summary: Video Movie Guide 2001 Review: This is definitely no turkey, give it 3 stars (out of five). This 3 star award is based on the video guide hit rate; that is, the ratio of movies physically in a video store vs. movies in the Video Guide. At Blockbuster and Hollywood for instance for every five videos on the shelf there's three in the book, ergo, three stars. After endless thumbing one finds one out of three on the shelf has 4-stars. Book design's the problem, an index in front could help end the endless page turning to get at something worthwhile.
Rating: Summary: There's Too Many, I Guess Review: I have enjoyed Leonard Maltin's Video Movie Guides for many years, using it to collect videos of the best of the movies shown on TV. However, I'm disappointed that the 2000 Video Movie Guide doesn't quite measure up to those issued in the past. Many of the made-for-TV movies which had appeared before, especially the ones rated 'Above Average', were omitted and the section at the back listing major directors and their movies was also omitted. Yet I will continue to regard this as the definitive movie review encyclopedia!
Rating: Summary: Everything I want...almost Review: I never rented a video until 1998! Honestly. Now, I qualify for a gold card at Blockbuster. However, after a few months of renting the obvious must watch films, I found myself reading box covers and renting bow wows. The people at Blockbuster tried to suggest films but were less than helpful ( do they ever watch anything but new releases?) and I pretty much stumbled around mumbling and grabbing anything with a cast member I liked. That leads, as we all know, to some pretty bad films. Then, VOILA, I found this book. At first, I just checked on movies I was considering but, later, I went through ALL the listings, marking films that seemed interesting and -are you ready? - making a list which I took to the video store!! Now, I am happily finding movies I would never have considered before and also rerenting some that deserve a second look. No longer do I rent four movies (I do get 2 free with my card) and only enjoy one. No longer do I spend an hour in the video store. No longer do I come home discouraged that no one makes interesting movies (try American Strays, Goodbye Lover, and October 22 if you want something different). If this book could only fix popcorn, I'd give it a 10.
Rating: Summary: O.k. I gave it a 5 stars, but ...... Review: A huge effort sure stands behind this wonderful book. It's simply amazing, handy and very useful besides being great fun too. But I think the authors should consider the following: 1. Like dictionaries, they should consider having alphabetical letters on top of pages with guide words as a hint for the alphabitical sorting. 2. They should focus on the film story rather than giving their own opinion out of their own point of view. I think it would be more helpful this way. 3. Some films I was surprised not to find like Forrest Gump for example. I think if these points were added. The book will be the best ever on the market. But as an overall look, I think it's already the best on the market. It's simply Unmatched.
Rating: Summary: Excellent and Easy to Use Review: I own a video store and use this comprehensive book as my bible to assist customers in researching videos, or finding a movie when they can only remember the name of one actor, a part of the title, or the director. Indexes are excellent. Love the use of a turkey symbol when the reviewers don't like the movie! You may not agree with all of their ratings (that's why they make chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, folks), but will enjoy the concise yet full descriptions of movies. Highly recommended!
Rating: Summary: The only Movie Guide I need Review: I have bought each year's edition of the Video Movie guide for 6 years. The reorganization of titles into alphabetical format was a good move, as it was sometimes confusing to categorize and therefore find a particular film. As I don't often rent videos I use the guide primarily to check whether or not to watch [and especially buy on a pay channel] a given movie on TV. The cast lists, etc., are invaluable for bets with my husband about who showed up in what movie. He usually wins. This is a great guide with few drawbacks. It delivers.
Rating: Summary: A GOOD DEAL, BUT I CANT RESPECT THEIR OPINIONS Review: THIS FILM GUIDE IS VERY COMPREHENSIVE, BUT STRANGELY LEAVES OUT SOME NEWER FILMS. BUT THIS GUIDE DOESNT DO JUSTICE TO SOME OFFBEAT CLASSICS AND TIM BURTON FILMS. AND IT GAVE ARMAGEDDON A BETTER REVIEW THAN DEEP IMPACT!
Rating: Summary: Great comprehensive guide good for cross-referencing Review: I've been getting this guide since the mid 90's due to its sheer amount of listings and how you can look up movies by title and you can look up actors and directors to see which movies they acted in and directed, respectively. It is also helpful due to the fact that the videos listed are videos available for purchase. Generally, if it is not available for purchase, then it does not find its way into the book. If like to see which actor was in which movie or which director directed which movie as well as a great movie guide, then this is your book!
Rating: Summary: very good guide Review: I think it's a very good guide. It has MOST of the movies that are new. I can't understand one thing though. How come there aren't all of the newer movies in the book such as "Election, There's Something About Mary,Bride Of Chucky,Playing by heart,The Other Sister, etc.... How come Maltin can do it but Video Movie Guide can't?
